Tate: I get a headache just thinking about it

CHAMPAIGN – December arrives Tuesday with momentous decisions facing the UI Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The shape of the coming years lies in the balance.
Where do we start?
Assembly Hall
Almost forgotten in the din of competition is the plan to initiate the first phase of Hall renovation. It takes money ... Big Money that could go beyond the $120 million required to modernize Memorial Stadium with revenue-producing suites and boxes.
Groundwork has been laid by UI fundraisers to the point where, in the next two to three months, presentations will be made to five major entities for the acquisition of naming rights, a sum in the neighborhood of $2 million per year for the next 20 to 25 years. Only after naming rights have been established to the tune of $40 or $50 million can the massive process move forward.
The leadership vacuum
The past chain of command was clear with athletic director Ron Guenther reporting to former UI chancellor Richard Herman while the Board of Trustees used sports-minded liaisons Robert Sperling and then Dave Dorris, both now gone.
While the new board has other pressing matters, it would be helpful if this situation was clarified at the December meeting. And, more than anything, it is critical to learn whether Guenther wishes to extend his contract beyond the one year remaining.
If Guenther elects to stay through 2012, and the board approves, issues related to the Assembly Hall and the shaky football situation could be handled routinely. But if Guenther intends (or is asked) to step down in December 2010, work should begin in the spring to locate a new director ahead of the fall semester because ... as is becoming clear, results from next football season could require a difficult decision by someone who intends to stay beyond 2010.
And in a matter perhaps unrelated, talks are surfacing on the idea of eliminating the chancellor's position at all three campuses. Interim president Stanley Ikenberry is in charge, but there is a feeling of instability that needs to be clarified.
Football problems
In each of Guenther's two football hires, the recruiting had slipped to a point where neither Ron Turner nor Ron Zook had much hope for early success. In their first two seasons at Illinois, Turner went 3-19 and Zook went 4-19. It is ironic that both peaked by reaching BCS bowls, only to slide back again.
While Guenther has announced Zook will be given another year, numerous factors must weigh into the ultimate evaluation after Saturday's game with Fresno State: (1) can serious recruiting slippage be turned, (2) what are the chances of Zook producing a winner against the difficulties of the schedule, (3) are there staff problems that need to be resolved and (4) what would be the severest financial setback, a buyout or the lost ticket revenue next season?
Short of Zook masterminding a stunning revival, it is a no-win situation. The current freshman class appears average by Big Ten standards, and the Illini are behind on the recruiting front for 2010. If this is compounded with further player acquisition shortfalls next year, the repercussions could be felt for years.
Meanwhile, next year's senior class has been diminished with washouts taking roughly half of the 21 original signees.
Basketball reappraisal
Two disappointing losses in Las Vegas require an agonizing reappraisal of Bruce Weber's cagers.
More than 1,000 UI fans watched the debacles, and one of them reverse-paraphrased Dennis Green when he said: "We aren't who we thought we were."
You'll recall Weber asked in the preseason, "Who's gonna guard?" He is still looking for that answer. Dribble penetration is just one of the concerns for a club that is being outmuscled.
The Alex Legion situation is becoming serious. Weber started the Kentucky transfer in both halves of Saturday's 72-68 loss to Bradley, removed him early and played him eight minutes altogether. Freshmen Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson, who impressed in early outings at home, unraveled on the Orleans court. These multiple problems influenced Weber to give Jeff Jordan 19 minutes Friday against Utah and 25 minutes Saturday, an indication that the coach is searching less for scoring and more for tenacity.
And it must be noted that while Mike Tisdale used his medium jumper to score 30 points in the two Vegas games, he didn't always win the post-up battles. Bradley center Will Egolf scored twice on layups to cut into the UI's 66-61 lead as the inspired underdogs outscored the Illini 11-2 in the final minutes.
What we saw in the non-televised events were widening cracks in the UI basketball foundation, cracks that may not be healed overnight.

when you don't play hard you get beat. we recruited some players who loaf and waltz through games and it shows. we recruit projects in the middle who can't cover athletic kids. until we get kids who go hard all the time we will ride the roller-coaster. as for football we are dead. 49 points. wow.
To say the kids don't play hard is wrong! I don't care if your talking about football or basketball or any Illini sport, those kids play hard. In Vegas they were out coached and out played in the utah game , the bradley game was a result of hangover from previous game. I am not ready to give up on these kids this year after 2 losses? They have a rough road ahead but can redeem themselves! Football, they will have alot of kids back, hopefully not all the coaches will be back and Zook will change defense systems!
The Illini basketball team has promising young players (they have what, 1 senior this year?) and a good signee class coming in. I'm not in panic mode about the BB team yet.
Football, on the other hand, is a complete disaster. Players can't play (or left school), coaches can't coach, and the AD doesn't have a clue how to run a successful FB program.
We as a University must want to win. Not hope. Until losing is not tolerated this will continue to happen. We have to fire Zook right now. There is a lot of good young coaches. We can't let recruiting fall again. I have never liked Weber. I liked Bill Self. So I am not going to comment. Money can get us a great coach if we really want it. If we are going to 120 million build a new building. No good business man would ever suggest we revamp and old building terrible money decision. Because in ten years you still have an old building.
FB - Do a buy out of RZ or risk lost revenue from ticket sales, concessions, parking, etc..
My vote is buy out RZ because there is no way I am buying season tickets again next year, if RZ is still the HC. Nor am I contributing my $$$s to the I Fund. This football program is a disaster and plain pathetic.
Thank-you totalilliniFan,you are so right.Howard Hughes was more visible than Guenther is.He rarely even attends any events outside of football and wrestling. If the basketball team is headed to a tropical paradise he will be right there.IM sure its ok with Bruce, after being yelled at by RG,At the NCAA game vs. Va Tech in 08......
If Guenther cared about Illinois, instead of his legacy, he would resign. Then the next AD could determine what to do about the fb situation after next year's season. If Guenther actually fired Zook, why do we think his 3rd hire would be any better than his last two?
1st loren tate is a idiot. 2nd turpin and tate both said weber is a great on court coach who just needed players, and they said wait till these freshman get here and and i will be eating crow. well the 2 homers bert and ernie what is your excuse now for weber? is it they r a young team, because mcamey davis tisdale cole r all juniors. chemestry? that falls on weber. injuries? none to speak of. so what could it be? WEBER he is a terrible coach, he lost most games in a season ever with lousy players and now he loses to utah and bradley with players that tate turpin and klee bragged about for 2 years. when will u hold webers feet to fire like everyone does to zook. look at weber from a sports writers point of view not his buddies point of view. and last but not least bert and ernie would u both just retire u r both very stale and your antics r old and wore out. get over youselves.
The Illinois program has major problems all around. We got a football coach who wants to do everything different when the basics are not taught at all. His kids make dumb decisions over and over again JUST LIKE THE STAFF! We have a basketball coach who keeps getting a free pass for taking 5 NBA players to the finals. He can't even call an out of bounds play. He just likes to stand on the side and yell like an idiot JUST LIKE KEADY! If it wasn't for Howard recruiting we would have zero hope in basketball. Our fans buy into the local hype year after year we have fairly smart fans compared to some of those other schools in the Big Ten, but they have to take the blinders off and realize 99% of what they hear is from two old goats (Tate & Turpin). I really like how Tate is sticking to his guns on football and the issues we have had(i agree it isn't Juice). Now its time to look to the other side of the street. Weber let the guys play a little if Zook could teach one thing while he is here for another year that would be it. I am not saying let them do what ever they want on and off the court, but Bruce you are a geek and these guys don't want to listen too your whinning all the time and really neither do I. JUST WIN BABY!
Coaches cannot shoot the ball for the players. This UI team must shoot at a decent percentage in order to win. This team is young, and the older players (mostly juniors) are still developing as well. This team will win when it scores, plays decent defense, and works together. There is nothing magic about that. It is good fundemental basketball.
Basketball coaching is easy to assess. Using the hopefulmike index, just determine the percentage of 3 point shots. The higher the percentage, the worse the coaching. Good teams shoot from inside 10 feet: short jumpers and layups by the front court and driving layups, backdoor layups, or pullup jumpers by the backcourt. Add to this offensive rebounds and putbacks, and you have a winning team. Good examples of this are teams coached by Tom Izzo and Bobby Knight. We lost the championship game because UNC pounded the ball inside and fouled out our frontcourt.
I'm tired of seeing Weber coached teams throw up 3 point shots. That is an act of desperation, and breeds inconsistency on offense. Everytime I see Illinois hold for one shot I cringe, because they never get a shot in the last ten seconds that isn't a desperation 3 pointer.
