Saturday's stars

SENIORS, Penn State. Of course, Joe Paterno sent them out the right way. The Nittany Lions have won their last 10 Senior Day games.

SECONDARY, Indiana (road games only). The Hoosiers have 10 interceptions in their last three road games. And 15 of their 16 interceptions have come away from Bloomington.

NERVES, Northwestern. Wildcats improved to 23-6 in games decided by seven points or less since 2000.

Keshawn Martin, Michigan State. Returned kickoffs (166 yards) like Tom Izzo recruits (really good).

LINEBACKERS, Penn State. Navorro Bowman had game-changing INT return for a touchdown, the school's first since Nolan McCready against Illinois in 2005, and 12 tackles. Josh Hull became the 20th different Nittany Lion to record at least 100 tackles in a season. And Sean Lee had 10 tackles and a career-high four pass breakups.

JOHN CLAY, Wisconsin. Became the sixth sophomore in school history to go over the 1,000-yard mark, joining P.J. Hill, Anthony Davis, Ron Dayne, Billy Marek and Alan Ameche. It's the fifth straight year a Badger has gained at least 1,000 yards and the 15th time in the last 17 seasons.

KEITH SMITH, Purdue. Had a career-best 15 catches. Plus his 152 yards marked his sixth 100-yard receiving game of the season, second most in a single season in school history. Steve Griffin (1984) and John Standeford (2002) did it seven times.

Devin Barclay, Ohio State. Kicked liked Tom Skladany when it mattered most.

Saturday's quote

"Got Dungy?" – Fan's sign at TCF Bank Stadium, a snarky suggestion that athletic director Joel Maturi should fire Tim Brewster and try to hire the Super Bowl-winning former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, who played for the Gophers in the 1970s.

Bowl forecast

LOOKING GOOD: Minnesota. Sure, the fans want Tim Brewster fired after another dismal performance. But for the second consecutive season, the Gophers have reached the required six wins, which means another month of practice and a faraway trip. Illinois, which hasn't made bowls in back-to-back seasons since who knows when, would love to trade places.

LOOKING BAD: Iowa. We warned you earlier this week the Hawkeyes could slip out of a January game. Step 1 – a loss to Ohio State - is complete. Step 2 – a loss to Minnesota – could drop Iowa into a fourth-place tie with Northwestern and Michigan State. Enjoy San Antonio, Coach Ferentz.

Big Ten record book

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, by the numbers:

– 5 consecutive Big Ten titles

– 36-13 against ranked teams

– His 227 victories rank fourth among active Division I coaches

– 80-6 when leading or tied at the half and 85-6 when leading or tied going into the fourth quarter.
