CHAMPAIGN – No. 5 has been good for Illinois running back Mikel Leshoure. So, No. 5 is going to give back.
After Saturday's game against Northwestern, Leshoure and his family will be giving five hams and five turkeys to both the Times Center and the Center for Women in Transition. The downtown Champaign facilities provide food and shelter for homelesss men and women, respectively.
"He wanted to do this," said Leshoure's mom, Jacqueline Frazier-Jones. "He came and asked me what can we do to show people he's willing to give back to his community? When Mikel was in high school, he had a lot of support, family, friends, everything. They always show support for Mikel."
The money for the hams and turkeys, which have already been purchased, came from Leshoure and his family.
"Everything's ready," Frazier-Jones said.
Frazier-Jones said they hope to make the ham and turkey giveaway an annual event. They timed it close to Thanksgiving, she said.
Leshoure is Illinois' leading rusher this season and is ranked seventh in the Big Ten. He had consecutive 100-yard games against Purdue and Michigan.
