It won't happen this NFL season, but some day former Illini cornerback Vontae Davis will be on the opposite side of the line of scrimmage from his older brother. While UI football fans wait for that bragging-rights showdown between the Dolphins rookie and the veteran 49ers tight end, they'll have to settle for this verbal duel on ESPN. It was taped before the 2009 NFL draft, so neither brother knew where Vontae was headed. ESPN's Dana Jacobson does a good job of getting each to open up about the sibling rivalry aspect of the brothers' relationship. When Jacobson asks Vontae whether he would want to be teammates with his brother, Vernon quickly interrupts and, with mock sternness, says "You might want to be on my team because when I see you on Sunday, it's going to be over." Vontae responds that he's rather be elsewhere so he can deliver "payback from him actually bullying me when I was younger." The brothers also banter about who would be faster in a foot race but agree on who would win in basketball (He's too strong," Vontae says of 250-pound Vernon) and at video games ("That's me!," Vontae exclaims, and Vernon doesn't disagree). A fun interview that reveals the strong connection of these two brothers. And kudos to Jacobson for not shying from uncomfortable topics (Vontae getting benched for the start of the Iowa game as a junior; 49ers coach Mike Singletary's blowup at Vernon following a personal-foul infraction).
