Asmussen's Insider: Illinois finally in my Bottom 5
Check out Asmussen's weekly video rant here
Each week, Bob Asmussen breaks down the game he loves:
TEAM OF THE WEEK
TCU
The Horned Frogs figured to have a tough time playing at Provo against BYU, where the Cougars have a great home-field advantage. They must have blocked the crowd noise out. Or practiced all week with jet engines blaring. They not only beat BYU, they pounded it. Quarterback ANDY DALTON continued his fine play, throwing three touchdown passes. The 38-7 win surprised coach GARY PATTERSON, who told the Horned Frogs to "enjoy it." We like that kind of attitude.
TEAM OF THE WEAK
SOUTH FLORIDA
In consecutive weeks, the Bulls have had a chance to knock off a ranked Big East team. And in consecutive weeks, they've been knocked into the ground instead. Pitt built a 31-7 halftime lead against South Florida and rolled to a 41-14 win. That should be good news for West Virginia, which visits Tampa on Friday night. We were fooled by JIM LEAVITT's team earlier in the season. Not now.
TOP 10
SCHOOL LAST WEEK
1. Florida (7-0) 1
- The old saying goes "I'd rather be Florida lucky than good." The officials seem to help out every week and the team survives another so-so effort by TIM TEBOW. The senior might win the Heisman, but it won't be with the help of The News-Gazette vote.
2. Texas (7-0) 2
- Last chance to lose in the regular season comes Saturday, when COLT McCOY and pals visit Oklahoma State. Don't think it will happen. You've got to like coach MACK BROWN, who at halftime of a blowout win against Missouri said the Longhorns needed to score some more points. And they did. If the pollsters are going to take style into account, get ready for a bunch of Texas blowouts.
3. Alabama (8-0) 3
- A week after moving to the top of The Associated Press poll, the Crimson Tide flopped back out after a close win against Tennessee. Resilient? Absolutely. Playing with fire? For sure. The defense is great, but the offense isn't. There will be other close games, including Saturday against LSU.
4. Boise State (7-0) 4
- Poor DICK TOMEY. His San Jose State Spartans are about to get run over by an angry bunch of Broncos. Why are they angry? Because of the BCS (see below). A couple of 70-pointers might get everybody's attention. The part of their schedule they control, the Broncos played reputable teams, including Oregon.
5. TCU (7-0) 5
- The Horned Frogs are in better position to play for the national title than Boise State. Out of conference, the best win came at Clemson. But the Mountain West is better at the top than the WAC. There's one nasty game left against Utah, but that one is in Fort Worth.
6. Cincinnati (7-0) 6
- There have been two close games in the first seven. It will be two in eight after Saturday's trip to Syracuse. West Virginia visits Nippert Stadium on Nov. 13, which should be a barnburner. The Bearcats have been very impressive, even with star quarterback TONY PIKE on the sidelines.
7. Iowa (8-0) 7
- The Hawkeyes are using every horseshoe, rabbit's foot, lucky penny and four-leaf clover available to them. They are definitely contenders for the BCS title game. But they are also 12 points from being 4-4.
8. Southern Cal (6-1) 8
- A.I. has been painted as anti-Trojan. Couldn't be further from the truth. PETE CARROLL is on A.I.'s favorite coach list. MATT BARKLEY is going to win the Heisman. The horse. The song. All good. But A.I. doesn't have great faith in this particular Southern Cal team. Why? Because it lost at Washington. Win at Oregon and we will be impressed.
9. LSU (6-1) 9
- Great win for LES MILES against Auburn. The Tigers have an easy one Saturday against Tulane before the next big Nov. 7 against Alabama. Based on the way LSU played against Florida, don't bet on it beating the Crimson Tide. But you never know.
10. Penn State (7-1) –
- There's a very good chance that the Nittany Lions will win out, finish 11-1 and not win the Big Ten title. They need Iowa to lose two games and that doesn't appear likely. But a co-championship with the Hawkeyes is a possibility if they get some help from Ohio State.
BOTTOM 5
SCHOOL LAST WEEK
120. New Mexico (0-7) 120
- Really, the loss to UNLV shouldn't count against MIKE LOCKSLEY's record. The suspended coach wasn't at the game and had to watch it on TV. He's back in time for the trip to San Diego State. Oh well, at least the weather will be nice.
119. W. Kentucky (0-7) 119
- After a string of somewhat close games, Middle Tennessee put up 62 on the Hilltoppers. Just a guess that the Middle Tennessee basketball team won't score that many against Western Kentucky. Saturday's opponent, North Texas, is almost as bad, but the game is in Denton.
118. Miami (Ohio) (0-8) 118
- The RedHawks are the next team to get out of the Bottom 5. They've played close games against Northern Illinois and Northwestern. Maybe Toledo will be the first victim.
117. Rice (0-8) 116
- The A Ronis are on a bad stretch, losing their last three by a combined 161-34. The good news: no loss this week. The bad news: they go to SMU on Nov. 7 for a game the Mustangs are going to count on winning.
116. Illinois (1-6) –
- RON ZOOK's team makes its first appearance. All it will take to get out is a win Saturday against Michigan. Or the following Saturday against Minnesota. Or the Saturday after that against Northwestern.

HEISMAN BALLOT
1. CASE KEENUM, Houston – The nation's total offense leader didn't need to do much in Saturday's win against the SMUrfs. He was 25 of 36 for 233 yards and a touchdown. Heisman voters will like his 20:4 touchdown to interception ratio and his team's 6-1 record. Nobody else has knocked off Oklahoma State.
2. KELLEN MOORE, Boise State – The nation's leader in passing efficiency is coming off a five-touchdown game at Hawaii. Not that anyone noticed, including poll voters (see below). He has a ridiculous 21:2 touchdown to interception ratio. What he doesn't have are bunch of 300-yard games (one, so far).
3. NOEL DEVINE, West Virginia – After a couple of off weeks (for him), Devine helped beat UConn with a long touchdown run late in the game. He finished with 178 yards for the 6-1 Mountaineers. He has scored a touchdown in every game.
RANDOM THOUGHTS
1. That's just wrong. The semifinalists for the DAVEY O'BRIEN Award were announced Monday and many of the players were deserving to make the cut. Houston's Keenum is on it. So is Notre Dame's JIMMY CLAUSEN. And Texas quarterback COLT McCOY. But why, oh why, did Iowa quarterback RICKY STANZI make the list? I'm sure he's a great kid, but he doesn't belong anywhere close to this group. Stanzi is currently 68th in the nation in passing efficiency, with 12 touchdown passes and eight interceptions. You tell me he's a winner. I tell you he almost lost to Northern Iowa and Arkansas State. Stanzi isn't the only guy who shouldn't be on the list. Washington's JAKE LOCKER is on their, too. He's actually below Stanzi on the passing efficiency list. But his team is great, right? Or 3-5.
2. That's just wrong II. We found a bigger sham than the Davey O'Brien semifinalists: this week's BCS rankings. Boise State put up 54 at Hawaii and dropped three spots. A reminder to computer programmers and poll voters: Boise State is the only team to beat Oregon. Maybe if the Ducks knock off Southern Cal that will help the Broncos. Probably not. Boise State already has four road wins. Penn State plays only four road games. Hopefully, a congressman from Idaho will begin an investigation into the BCS.
3. Let them talk. The SEC is on a spree of verbal reprimands to its coaches for speaking out about the officials. Here's a thought: hire better officials. Each week, it seems, the SEC apologizes for a mistake made by one or more of its crews. Mississippi State's DAN MULLEN and Tennessee's LANE KIFFIN are the latest to get the wrath of commissioner MIKE SLIVE. Mullen and Kiffin are new to the league and must believe in this crazy concept of freedom of speech, which is the law everywhere but in the SEC.
"Mullen and Kiffin are new to the league and must believe in this crazy concept of freedom of speech, which is the law everywhere but in the SEC"
While I'm with you that the coaches should be able to criticize obviously awful officiating, employers/regulatory entities are allowed to reprimand those under their employ/jurisdiction for violating rules of the entity. The SEC can reprimand coaches just like I'm sure the N-G could reprimand you Bob if you started talking trash about the owners on the local news.
