Illinois football coach Ron Zook held his first press conference for the 2009 season Tuesday. Here are five questions he answered:

Q: When you have a new offensive coordinator, does it help to have a quarterback who has been around? Is Juice Williams almost teaching Coach Mike Schultz in some ways?
A: I wouldn’t go quite that far. Juice has made progress, but I don’t know that he’s teaching Coach Schultz. Coach Schultz, this is not his first rodeo. He’s coached a lot of third downs. One of the things that was exciting to me, when the new coaches came in we weren’t going to reinvent the wheel. This is what we believe in. We feel comfortable with it.

Q: What happened to Cordale Scott last year?
A: Freshman. Look at A.J. I can remember A.J. Jenkins in the Northwestern game, and this is not a hit on A.J., but A.J. cared about one thing, getting home. He was just worn out. He was mentally exhausted. The pressure these guys are under academically, the pressure they are under footballwise, it’s hard for a true freshman to play.

Q: What is Josh Brent’s status?
A: It has not changed. It’s in the hands of the legal system. I think his court date is April 30. Josh is suspended.

Q: How has Martez Wilson progressed?
A: He’s fine. He’s 100 percent. No issues whatsoever. He went through the whole winter program. Hopefully, he’ll continue to improve. We all want him to be the kind of player that we think he can be.

Q: What is the team’s attitude going into the spring?
A: I think we all learned an awful lot last year. I learned an awful, awful lot. There’s things I would have changed. I think we got away from what’s important. We started worrying about winning instead of letting the wins and losses take care of themselves. Our football team, they’re focused and excited about being the type of football team they can be.

Doesn't anyone ever ask who is going to punt (maybe aim for the corner) and kick off (maybe NOT aim for the corner)??
