CHAMPAIGN – Most top NFL draft prospects are picky about when and in front of whom they work out. Give Vontae Davis a football field and a stopwatch and he'll showcase his skills to anyone.
"Any day I'm willing to come out and just play. That's part of what I do," Davis said after participating in the pro timing day hosted by Illinois. "If they want to see me backpedal, I'll backpedal. I don't have (anything) to hide, that's the biggest thing."
The former Illinois defensive back, who is forgoing his senior season, didn't hold out of any drills Wednesday. Davis' vertical jump – 37 1/2 inches – was better than the 36 he posted at the combine last month. He ran the 40-yard dash – 4.35 seconds – and the three-cone drill. He finished it off with some position-specific drills.
"I felt real good," Davis said. "I'm pleased with it; I always want to do better."
His trainer, Myron Flowers, will make sure Davis always is striving to do better. Despite how well Davis thought he performed at Wednesday's pro day, Flowers found room for improvement.
Dropping balls during drills is unacceptable.
"I owe my trainer 20 pushups because I dropped like two balls, so I got to do those pushups after this interview," Davis said.
According to Flowers, Davis' math is a little bit off.
"It's actually 60 pushups," said Flowers, who trains dozens of football players from the Washington, D.C., area, including Davis' older brother and San Francisco 49er Vernon. "He dropped three balls, so it's 20 pushups per drop. I stay on him pretty good."
NFL draft experts have projected Davis to go anywhere from the top 10 to late in the first round. The projections don't hold much water with Davis.
"I don't pay attention because it's all within the National Football League and what they think of people," the first-team All-Big Ten cornerback said. "All the outside world, that's their opinion. But in the long run it's on April 25."
After leaving Champaign on Wednesday, Davis is scheduled for a private workout with the Cleveland Browns on Friday and the Dolphins next week.
