Recruiting: Lineman loves UI
Each weekday, Jeremy Werner writers a recruiting blog for HQ. For Friday, he talked to Illinois football recruit Jake Feldmeyer.
Jake Feldmeyer and Adam Replogle have had some pretty big battles at practice during their time at Centerville (Ohio) High. The teammates are hoping to have even more showdowns in the future with Replogle committed to Indiana and Feldmeyer headed to Illinois.
Feldmeyer, a 6-foot-4 guard, said he's unsure whether he and Replogle, a 6-foot 3, 265 defensive tackle, will watch the Indiana-Illinois game on Saturday night but said he's looking forward to future match-ups between the Hoosiers and the Illini.
"Definitely that's going to be real cool," Feldmeyer said. "Two Centerville guys going against each other."
Feldmeyer committed to the Illini in July. He said "the people is the most important thing" in his decision.
"Coach (Ron) Zook is a great coach. He's really turned the program around. Then Coach (Eric) Wolford, the offensive line coach, he seems like the kind of guy who's really going to get the best out of me. I don't know, it just seemed like a really good fit. (Wolford is) an intense guy. But for the program I'm coming from, Centerville, that's what it's all about. He's the kind of guy that's hungry and wants to win."
The Centerville Elks football program is one of the more storied programs in Ohio. Some of the more famous graduates are ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit, Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk and New York Jets kicker Mike Nugent.
"There's no place I'd rather the play (than Centerville)," Feldmeyer said. The tradition there is phenomenal. It's unmatched by anything."
While many high schools are starting to mirror the spread and shotgun offenses of the collegiate ranks, Centerville runs the old-school, smashmouth style of football. The Elks rushed for 2,285 yards in its first eight games.
"For Centerville, that's all we do," Fedlmeyer said. "Even when it's a passing play, it's play action and we're coming off the line hard. That's all we focus on every day and in individuals. We have to move the line of scrimmage in order to be successful. When we have a bad drive, it's because we're not getting the movement we need. It's a lot of responsibility for the offensive line, but we like that and try to live up to it."
Feldmeyer said the Elks have passed the ball more this year because of a talented quarterback. Centerville passed for 291 yards in its week one game, but Feldmeyer said he has concentrated on pass blocking technique to prepare for the Illinois spread.
"The spread offense, I like it from what I've seen," Feldmeyer said. "The only experience I've had with it is from playing video games when I'm playing Illinois. It's a great offense that I think I can fit in and be a part of it."
