Football players arrested for marijuana

URBANA – Illinois wide receivers Terrance Smalls and William Loyd were arrested on preliminary charges of possession of marijuana during an incident Friday night.

Illinois coach Ron Turner said Smalls will not be with the team this week, and a permanent decision will be made later. Lloyd is out for the season after suffering a broken leg against Iowa.

"It's extremely disappointing," Turner said. "We're not going to tolerate this kind of behavoir."

Smalls, Loyd and two others were issued notices to appear in court Nov. 18.

Police were called to a report of a loud party at the Melrose Apartments, 1707 N. Lincoln Ave., about 11:17 p.m. Friday, according to an Urbana police report.

Officers went to apartment 834 and detected a strong odor of marijuana, Urbana police Sgt. Pat Connolly said. When they knocked on the door and someone came to the door, officers could see a small amount of marijuana in plain view, he said.

Police obtained consent to search the apartment and found a small amount of marijuana. Two men admitted to possessing and smoking marijuana, Connolly said.

Smalls has 11 catches for 101 yards and no touchdowns this season.
