Short-handed Illini play without trio
The Illini defense was short two potential starters against the Cougars.
Defensive end Fred Wakefield was at home in Tuscola with a virus. According to Illinois officials, the virus is bothering Wakefield in the chest. He will return to the hospital Tuesday for tests.
"They could say he's ready to go, or it could be a couple weeks," Illinois coach Ron Turner said.
The Illini needed Wakefield's pass-rushing ability against Washington State. Illinois was credited with only one sack.
Cornerback Johnnie Harris and receiver William Loyd also didn't make the trip.
Harris is one of the team's backup cornerbacks and was expected to battle for a starting job this season. Loyd had fallen on the depth chart behind five other players.
Neither players has been cleared to play by the NCAA. Turner said the school was working on their cases as late as Thursday.
"We think we'll be able to get both of them ready to go this week," Turner said.
