Illini football practice update

News and notes from Monday's UI practice:

MOVING ON

Backup quarterback Brian Sheard, who had been working with the Illinois scout squad, has left the Illinois team. The redshirt freshman from Thornridge started training camp sharing second team with Tim Lavery. But he quickly fell behind, dropping to No. 5. Sheard is the third quarterback to leave the program or change positions since Ron Turner took over. Justin Cella moved to defensive end and Brian Hodges is playing tight end.

LIT UP

On Monday, Turner was still trying to decide where to hold practices this week. Turner prefers to stay on the grass fields to the east of Memorial Stadium. With the clocks being set back an hour, the sun might not cooperate. Turner's team went in the stadium for Monday's drills, which started at about 5 p.m.

PLAY TIME

After the end of Monday's practice, the Illini deep reserves and scout team players held a scrimmage. It was a chance for the players to show their improvement to the UI staff.

INJURY UPDATE

The Illini had no new injuries in Saturday's game. Defensive end Ryan Murphy and defensive tackle Garrett Johnson both made it through the game.

POSITION WATCH

Michael Dean as moved ahead of George McDonald-Ashford at one receiver spot. McDonald-Ashford drew the ire of Turner by fumbling in Saturday's game.

COUNTDOWN TO INDIANA

4 days

SERIES HIGHLIGHT: Illinois' last visit to Bloomington, Ind., proved to be a happy homecoming for Kevin Hardy. With his family and friends in the stands for the 1995 game, the future first-round draft choice had 10 tackles and three sacks. Scott Weaver's 14-yard touchdown pass to Ty Douthard in the third quarter gave Illinois a 17-10 lead. Neither team scored in the final 23 minutes. Illini freshman Steve Havard saw his first action of the season, gaining 50 yards on 13 carries.
