Purdue game review and Indiana game preview

REVIEW

Every game has a defining moment when the outcome is established. Here's the play from Saturday's Illinois-Purdue game:

THE SITUATION

Trailing 7-0 midway through the first quarter, the Illini face a fourth down and 13 at their own 13.

THE PLAY

Ryan Tabloff, who has struggled this season, unleashes the punt of his life. The ball sails far over the head of Purdue returner Vinny Sutherland.

THE RESULT

Rather than letting the ball roll dead, Sutherland makes an unwise play and tries to pick it up. On a cold day, Sutherland loses the handle and the ball bounds toward the Illinois sideline. Racing in on coverage, Illinois junior Steve Willis tries to scoop the ball in stride.

THE OUTCOME

Willis' try for a touchdown fails as the ball rolls away. The Boilermakers retain possession at their own 1. Twelve plays later, Purdue completes a 99-yard touchdown drive with a short touchdown pass to Brian Alford. Illinois never recovers, losing 48-3.

PREVIEW

The Illini try to end a 13-game losing streak Saturday when they visit Indiana. A quick read on the Hoosiers:

LAST GAME

Iowa scored seven touchdowns from 19 yards and beyond as it routed the Hoosiers 62-0 Saturday in Iowa City.

WHO TO WATCH

Quarterback Jay Rodgers. The former Champaign resident left the city when his dad, Randy, moved with John Mackovic's staff to Texas. So far, Rodgers has managed to hold off touted Indiana freshman Earl Haniford. Haniford didn't help his cause any against Iowa, throwing two interceptions in seven attempts. Rodgers had two interceptions in 26 tries.

WHERE TO WATCH

For the second consecutive game, at the stadium. The game wasn't picked by any of the Big Ten's television partners.

REASON TO WATCH

This is Illinois' last best hope this season to end its losing streak. Only Northern Illinois prevents the Illini from being a national story. Indiana isn't doing much better, losing 15 of its last 17 games.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • At 36, Indiana''s Cam Cameron is the youngest coach in the Big Ten Conference.
  • Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Ind., seats 52,354. But it''s a good bet there will be plenty of empty seats for this game. The last time Illinois played at Indiana, in 1995, the game drew just 38,098.
  • THE RECORD
