Memorable N-G covers: Best of Juice Williams

Want to hang one of these covers in your Orange & Blue TV Room? Here's how

Covers from Dee Brown's career

Covers from the 2004-05 run to the Final Four

Covers from the 2007 Illini's run to the Rose Bowl

In a continuing series, we'll take a look back at memorable Illini moments through the covers of News-Gazette sports sections.

Today: No one symbolizes the ups and downs of the Ron Zook era like quarterback Juice Williams, the face of Illinois football who is certain to draw the loudest ovation during Senior Day festivities at Memorial Stadium.

— Sept, 24, 2006: Juice's debut as a starter didn't look good in the scoring summary (9 of 32 for 161 yards and a score) but he did show flashes in a loss to No. 14 Iowa. Link

— April 15, 2007: Like Dee Brown, Juice was a big hit on campus. We verified his status as Mr. Popularity by spending a day with him: on the bus, in the classroom, at lunch. Link

— Sept. 30, 2007: Memorial Stadium wasn't the only renovation project on campus. The football team stated its case with a win against mighty Penn State. Fittingly, Juice led the team into the new north end zone stands to celebrate with students. Link

— Nov. 11, 2007: The defining moment of Juice's career was his gutsy effort in the upset of No. 1 Ohio State. Even when the team plane arrived in Savoy, Juice was still delivering, meeting and greeting fans who showed up to welcome home the team. Link

— Dec. 31, 2007: Wherever the Illini went during their magical run to the Rose Bowl, Juice usually was out front. That was the case when Ron Zook's team visited Universal Studios for a pregame pep rally. Link

— Jan. 2, 2008: The Illini's storybook season ended with a thud as USC trounced Juice and Co. 49-17 in the Rose Bowl. Juice was sacked five times and fumbled twice under constant pressure. Link

— Aug, 3, 2008: Juice was Ron Zook's first key recruit, helping the Illini lure other prep stars out of the Chicago area. Juice never ceased to help spread the word about Illinois, be it during recruiting visits or, in this case, as Big Ten media day in Chicago. Link

— Sept. 6, 2008: Juice never hesitated to help us out. To preview the first game at refurbished Memorial Stadium, the quarterback stood in the mud and still smiled for our cameras. Link

— Oct. 5, 2008: To celebrate a record-setting performance in a rout of Michigan, Juice got up close and personal with Illini fans who traveled to the Big House. All was not well, however, as Illinois finished 2-5 to miss out on a bowl bid. Link

— Sept. 3, 2009: We were sure Juice would leave Illinois a winner, making him an easy choice to grace the cover of our preseason special section. Boy were we wrong. Though not entirely his fault, Juice failed to return the Illini to the postseason, getting benched along the way. Link

Congratulations on a great career.Juice you did it with dignity and class.Too bad you had to play at a time when the Illini posessed both a weak coach and a weak AD!
