Marcos Asse has joined the Illini men's tennis coaching staff as an assistant, UI head coach Brad Dancer announced Tuesday.
Asse comes to Illinois after five years on the College of William & Mary staff, including the last two as associate head coach. He fills the position vacated by former associate head coach George Husack, who resigned in July to become associate head coach at Southern California.
"I see Marcos playing a leading role in challenging our guys in performing at higher levels," Dancer said. "Marcos possesses a thorough understanding of the nuances of personality and its effect on developing game styles.  He has an excellent reputation for recognizing traits and instinct for drawing out the best in players."
In his first season at William & Mary, Asse helped guide the Tribe to the 2005 NCAA Tournament. During Asse's tenure, William & Mary attained its highest ITA national ranking - No. 31 in 2007.
"I couldn't be more excited to be connected with one of the top teams in collegiate tennis right now," Asse said. "I'm looking forward to working with Brad because I think a lot of our coaching philosophies are well-aligned and I hope to add an element to the program that will make it even stronger."
Asse's prior coaching duties include serving as head tennis professional at the Westside Tennis Park in his hometown of Gainesville, Fla., and as girls' head coach at Oak Hill High School in 2004.
