Winckler rates call from Hall

CHAMPAIGN — Former Illinois women’s track and field coach Gary Winckler will be among six people inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December in Orlando, Fla.
Winckler coached for 34 years, including 23 at the helm of Illinois’ program.
During Winckler’s UI tenure, his teams won 11 Big Ten championships, and his Illini athletes won 266 individual Big Ten titles. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year 11 times and NCAA Coach of the Year three times.
Other 2009 inductees: Arthur Gulden (Bucknell), Franklin Pitcher “Pitch” Johnson (Drake/Stanford), Oscar Moore Jr. (Rowan), Charles (Chuck) Rohe (Furman/Tennessee) and Duane Vandenbusche (Western State College of Colorado).
