UI´s Kronfest, Mitchell start off on right foot

The UI men´s cross-country team opened its season with a second-place finish at the Meet of Champions on Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.

Three Illini finished among the top 10 individuals at the six-team, 8,000-meter event, including second-place finisher John Kronfest, whose time of 25 minutes, 10.7 seconds was a career best.

Kronfest and Justin Mitchell, who finished sixth, returned to action for the first time after missing last season with injuries. Teammate Adam Palumbo finished 10th.

Iowa won the team competition with 26 points.

Women´s team seventh.

The UI women´s cross-country team finished seventh Friday at the Bradley Open.

Jamie Turilli paced the Illini with a 20th-place finish in the 5,000-meter event. The Bloom-ington native finished in 19:03, just ahead of fellow freshman Joy Braun. Braun´s time of 19:14 was good for 24th.

In men´s golf:

Lound leads UI. Geoff Lound carded a second-round 71 and trails Wisconsin´s Jon Turcott and Southeastern Louisiana´s Andy Smith by 4 strokes heading into today´s final round of the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis.

Lound is tied for seventh at 141.
