Davis, Orioles to make deal

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois catcher Adam Davis reached agreement on a contract with the Baltimore Orioles and was scheduled to sign with the American League team today at its minor league complex in Sarasota, Fla.

The senior-to-be was selected in the 11th round of the MLB amateur draft June 7. Davis is the fourth member of the 2011 Illini to turn pro, joining fellow draftees Josh Parr (Diamondbacks) and Corey Kimes (Twins), and free agent Chris Pack (Marlins).

Davis will begin his pro career at Sarasota with Baltimore's Rookie League-level team in the Gulf Coast League.

In his first season as a full-time starter for Illinois this year, Davis hit .290 with five home runs and 33 RBI. The All-Big Ten second-team selection also led Illinois in doubles (14) and total bases (96). Behind the plate, he threw out 34.6 percent of runners attempting to steal.
