Gay's pitching keeps Illini hot
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Illinois softball team won its 10th straight game Saturday, beating Bradley 5-1 behind pitcher Pepper Gay's seven strikeouts in the Children's Hospital Invitational.
The 21st-ranked Illini improved to 16-1. Their game against No. 3 Missouri later Saturday was rained out. Jessica Davis' two-out double in the fifth inning drove in three runs and broke the game open.
"Their pitcher kept us off balance for a few innings, but we made adjustments and started seeing the ball better. It was nice to get the win but this wasn't one of our better performances," UI assistant coach Katie O'Connell said.
The Illini managed four hits against Bradley (9-8).
In men's gymnastics:
Michigan edges Illini. Despite winning five of six individual titles and posting a season-high score, the third-ranked Illini men fell to No. 4 Michigan 359.650-358.650 at Huff Hall. It was the Illini's first loss after 10 victories.
"Once again, we continue to up our score, but we are so much better than what we showed today," UI associate head coach Justin Spring said.
Chad Wiest won floor exercise, Luke Stannard took pommel horse and Yoshi Mori was victorious on vault. Tyler Mizoguchi placed first on parallel bars and beat out Mori for the all-around title. Paul Ruggeri, battling a knee injury, won on high bar.
"It doesn't help when one of our star guys has a really rough day," Spring said of Ruggeri. "He didn't start off well and was worried about his knee, but he was able to come back and hit one event for us and that was kind of all he had. But we had a lot of mistakes on a variety of places and our anchors had some big misses."
In women's gymnastics:
Illini win on Senior Day. Melissa Fernandez matched her career best with a 9.925 to tie for first on bars and Allison Buckley took home the floor crown as No. 13 Illinois beat No. 14 Missouri 196.200-195.500. Senior Sarah Schmidt scored a career-high 39.425 in the all-around to finish second behind Missouri All-American Sarah Shire.
"Sarah did well on her strong events, but she also did very well on her weaker events," Illini coach Bob Starkell said. "She has spent a lot of time working on her vault and beam with the coaches, which has helped her get into a solid all-around position."
In baseball:
Coastal Carolina 9, UI 4. The Illini squandered a 3-0 lead at Conway, S.C. Casey McMurray hit his second home run in as many nights – doubling his career total – and Willie Argo was 2 for 3 in the loss.
