Ruggeri, Mizoguchi pace UI gymnasts

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Paul Ruggeri (parallel bars, high bar) and Tyler Mizoguchi (rings, all-around) won a pair of events Sunday, leading the fourth-ranked Illinois men's gymnastics team to an impressive 357.500-346.600 victory against No. 10 Iowa.

The Illini (10-0, 8-0 Big Ten) posted a season-high team score en route to winning five of six individual events.

"Our scores keep building and as we get closer to Michigan next weekend and the Big Tens, we want to keep pushing and keep raising those scores," associate head coach Justin Spring said. "I'm excited for the guys. It was a great win."

Luke Stannard won pommel horse and Daniel Ribeiro claimed the vault title for the Illini.

In baseball:

West Virginia 11, UI 8. First baseman Matt Dittman was 3 for 4 and Brandon Hohl drove in a career-high three, but the Illini left the bases loaded to end the game against the Mountaineers in Greenville, N.C.

Illinois led 5-3 before the bullpen surrendered eight straight runs in a second consecutive loss.

"We're doing things in games that we haven't done in practice, so we have to get that corrected," Illinois coach Dan Hartleb said.

In women's tennis:

UI 4, TCU 3. Megan Fudge and Marisa Lambropoulous each earned straight-set victories against ranked opponents to lead the Illini in Fort Worth, Texas.
