5 O'Clock Shadow
News you can't leave work without:
Brandon Wikoff isn't the only Illini on the MLB draft radar. College baseball beat writer Jeff Huth looks at other UI players and recruits who could hear their name called when the First-Year Player Draft begins a three-day run Tuesday:
Dominic Altobelli
The senior third baseman is coming off his best season at the plate, hitting .361 with eight homers and a team-high 53 RBI. However, the Oak Forest native didn't help his draft value with his fielding. With 22 errors at the hot corner, his pro future might be at first base or as a corner outfielder if his glovework doesn't improve.
Seth Schwindenhammer
Among Illini signed recruits, this power-hitting senior from Bartonville Limestone might be the most difficult to hang onto. Some project the center fielder going in the top 15 rounds. Schwindenhammer belted 15 home runs and drove in 52 runs this spring while hitting .434. The fact that he hits from the left side adds to his value. Schwindenhammer has the potential to be an immediate starter in an Illini outfield that must replace senior center fielder Joe Bonadonna. The question is whether he'll actually make it to campus.
Matt Milroy
The Aurora Marmion Academy right-hander typically has drawn a half-dozen or so scouts to games in which he's pitched. He's given them plenty to write in their reports, striking out 101 batters in 51 2/3 innings while going 7-2 with a 1.76 ERA. Milroy says he's made it clear to scouts he prefers to go to college. "I think all the guys know my feeling," Milroy told The News-Gazette this week. That could change, however, if any signing-bonus offer he might receive "would be dumb" to turn down. Milroy pegs that number at around $500,000.
Johnson & Johnson
Other draft possibilities include junior catcher Aaron Johnson and pitching recruit Kevin Johnson. If either is selected, they're likely to go in the later rounds, where the money offers typically are meager and unattractive when compared to a college scholarship. Aaron Johnson made major strides at the plate in his second year at Illinois - hitting .333 with 10 homers and 52 RBI - but struggled at times with his receiving (nine passed balls). Kevin Johnson, a right-hander from Chicago Mount Carmel, has seen interest from scouts wane as the season progressed. Still, with a fastball that occasionally reaches 90 mph and a 6-foot-3 frame, he could see his name come up on Day 2 of the draft.
