Illini team up for no-hitter
HOUSTON – Ashley Wright, Taylor Call and Monica Perry combined to allow one earned run on one hit in 13 innings as Illinois won twice at Saturday's Houston Invitational.
In a 9-1 win against Prairie View A&M, Call and Wright combined for the Illini's first no- hitter since 2003. Perry pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts in the UI's 3-1 win against Northern Illinois.
"Our pitchers really hit their spots, moved around the zone well and had confident presence in the circle," UI coach Terri Sullivan said. "I'm so proud of Ashley, Taylor and Monica. They put together one of the best pitching days we've had in some time at Illinois."
Second baseman Danielle Zymkowitz extended her hitting streak to 13 games, the second longest in school history behind Lana Armstrong's 18 in 2007.
Armstrong had four RBI and Meredith Hackett had three for the Illini, who have won four in a row.
In baseball:
Notre Dame 14, Illinois 7. Third baseman Dominic Altobelli went 2 for 4 with a career-high-tying four RBI – including a three-run triple – but the Illini couldn't protect a late lead in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge game at Bradenton, Fla.
The Illini led 7-4 in the sixth inning before the Irish responded.
The UI's Josh Parr collected his first career extra-base hit with a second-inning double. Brandon Wikoff and Casey McMurray each scored two runs.
In women's tennis:
Illinois 5, Harvard 2. Megan Fudge stayed perfect, and Illinois stayed hot.
In Boston, Fudge improved to 8-0 with a win at No. 2 singles as the Illini won their fourth consecutive match as they kicked off a road swing in impressive fashion. Illinois got by without Amy Allin, out due to injury.
"It shows the amount of depth that our team has this year," UI coach Michelle Dasso said.
Chelcie Abajian, Shivani Davé and Kristina Minor also won in singles play for Illinois (6-2).
In women's swimming:
Clapp honored. Marissa Clapp was the UI's top point scorer at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Kristen Kloeckener was the Sportsmanship Award recipient. Indiana won the meet, which concluded Saturday. Illinois finished 11th.
In women's gymnastics:
Illinois second. Compiling its best road score of the season – 195.900 – Illinois finished second at the Washington Quad in Seattle. Nicole Cowart was second in the all-around.
