Illini belt out 15 hits in 11-0 win over Flames
CHICAGO – Illinois racked up 15 hits Wednesday night in rolling to an 11-0 nonconference baseball victory over Illinois-Chicago in a game halted after six innings by rain.
The victory was the Illini's eighth in a row, their longest such streak since 1994. Illinois is 26-25 heading into a four-game Big Ten Conference series against Northwestern starting Friday at Illinois Field.
Seven Illini had two hits apiece, including Danny Rhodes, who tripled and drove in three runs. Both of D.J. Svihlik's hits were doubles. Others with two hits included Dusty Rhodes, Craig Marquie, Kevin Rudden, Jon Anderson and Shawn Targgart.
Starter Brian Hecht, 5-6, pitched three perfect innings to earn the victory. The senior right-hander struck out four.
Brian Funk, who struck out three, followed with two shutout innings. Cody Salter pitched the final inning for Illinois. The trio combined to limit Illinois-Chicago to three hits and did not issue a walk.
Meanwhile, the Flames used eight pitchers in falling to 0-7 against the Illini in the 1990s. In the teams' last three meetings, Illinois has outscored UIC 47-11.
Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the second on Svihlik's RBI double.
The Illini scored six times in the third, two coming in on a Todd McClure single. Rudden, Danny Rhodes, Dan O'Neill and Anderson all had run-scoring hits during the inning.
Danny Rhodes drove in two runs with a triple in a three-run Illini sixth.
