The University of Illinois volleyball team needed just 58 minutes to win its season opener this morning, rolling to a 3-0 victory over Delaware in the the Jefferson Cup Tournament at Charlottesville, Va.
The Illini, behind Mary Coleman's team-high 11 kills, defeated the Blue Hens 15-3, 15-9, 15-0. The Game 3 shutout was Illinois' first blanking of an opponent since Nov. 8, 1992, when it held Loyola without a point in Game 2 of a 3-1 victory.
The Illini were scheduled to play Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m. today as the two-day, five-team round robin tournament continued.
Sophomore outside hitter Annie Stoessel made her first career start today, hitting .833 while contributing five kills. Middle blocker Cristy Chapman added seven kills as the Illini outhit Delaware .431-.139.
