LIEGE, Belgium — Illinois All-American Angela Bizzarri fell short in her bid to qualify for the IAAF World Championships in the 5,000 meters on Wednesday at the Belgian Liege track and field meet.

The reigning NCAA champion placed fifth in 15 minutes, 57.23 seconds. Bizzarri needed to run at least 15:25.00 — the B standard for next month’s world meet in Berlin.

The Illini senior-to-be entered with a personal-best and school-record time of 15:33.02, which she ran at the USA Championships in June while placing third.

American Renee Baillie won in 15:20.53.

Women’s tennis shines in St. Louis. Leigh Finnegan won the singles crown while Chelcie Abajian and Rachael White claimed the doubles title at the ITA Summer Circuit tournament at Washington University.

Finnegan defeated UI teammate Marisa Lambropoulos 4-6, 6-1 (10-7) in the singles championship. Abajian and White defeated Illinois teammates Lambropoulos and Breanne Smutko 8-4 in the doubles finale.

Golfers advance. Luke Guthrie reached the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Norman, Okla., with a 2-up victory against Ryan Perez of Ewa Beach, Hawaii. Illinois’ Zach Barlow lost a 19-hole match against Alton Anderson Jr., of Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Matt Hoffman shot 62 Wednesday to move into second place after two rounds of the Ontario, Canada, Amateur. Hoffman trails NCAA champ Matt Hill by 1 stroke.
