Edinger, Illini dig weekend of winning
CHAMPAIGN – Ashley Edinger had 24 digs on her way to breaking the all-time Illinois record with 1,442 in the Illini's 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 27-25 volleyball win against Ohio State on Saturday.
Edinger was chorused with a countdown to the record from the Huff Hall student section.
"I wasn't focused on it, but I did hear the student section," Edinger said. "I was just worried about beating Ohio State, though. I'm glad I got to do it at home and celebrate with everyone."
The win was No. 17 Illinois' fifth straight and eighth in its last nine matches.
The Illini (18-5, 9-3) moved into sole possession of second place after navigating the weekend with two Big Ten wins.
"Ohio State has to be the best last-place team in the country," UI coach Don Hardin said. "Their athletic ability is impressive. It just shows how strong the Big Ten Conference is this year."
Laura DeBruler had 15 kills and 13 digs for Illinois, which received 14 kills and eight blocks from Michelle Bartsch.
"Wins like this can really make a season," Hardin said.
In men's tennis:
Two advance. Illinois' Meedo El Tabakh and Ruan Roelofse won matches to remain alive at the Big Ten Singles Championships in Madison, Wis.
In hockey:
Liang leads way. Johnny Liang scored two third-period goals for Illinois in a 6-0 home victory against Robert Morris.
Jordan Pringle had two assists for Illinois, which scored twice in each period.
DJ Kohler made 15 saves to earn his first shutout of the season.
Joe Cardona, Rob Deubel, Tim Gilbert and Matt Jennings also scored for the Illini.
