LAS VEGAS – Third-ranked Illinois junior Jimmy Kennedy beat Boise State's Andrew Hochstrasser to win the 133-pound title Saturday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

The 6-4 victory moved Kennedy's record to 9-0 this season.

"It's really good to get this win since I wasn't able to finish this tournament last year because I was sick," Kennedy said. "I got through the first few matches with everything clicking, and I was able to ride that momentum throughout the tournament."

Clapp finds the speed. Bismarck-Henning product Marissa Clapp accounted for 95 Illini points to lead Illinois to a third-place finish at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational on Saturday. Clapp ended the meet with a win in the 400 individual medley, a second in the 200 IM and a third in the 200 breast.

Masheto wins twice. Senior All-American Gakologelwang Masheto had a hand in two of four event victories by the Illinois men's track and field team in the indoor season-opening Saluki Fast Start meet Friday at Carbondale.

Masheto finished first in the 400 meters in 48.30 seconds and anchored a win in the 1,600 relay. Masheto combined with Dan Jones, Gary Miller and Maxwell Mkwezalamba for a 3:18.74 clocking.

Also winning for the Illini were Brian Beaird in the 800 (1:54.42) and freshman Graham Farnsworth in the mile (4:24.57).

Illinois accounted for two of the top three finishers in the 600, with Miller placing second (1:21.16) and junior Scott Phelps of Monticello third (1:21.35).

Redshirt freshman Aaron Mathis of Urbana was fifth in the pole vault at 15 feet, 1 inch.
