WINDERMERE, Fla. – The Illinois men's golf team opened the loaded Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in 10th place Sunday after an opening-round 306 (18 over par).
Luke Guthrie was tied for 14th, 5 strokes behind the leaders after shooting a 1-over 73.
Scott Langley (t-16th at 2 over) was the only other Illini in the Top 25.
The field includes 11 of the Top 25 teams in the country.
In women's soccer:
Penn State 6, Illini 0. A new formation brought a similar result for the UI soccer team Sunday at State College, Pa.
The Illini, who fell to 1-4-2 in Big Ten play, had three defenders and four midfielders instead of four and three in an effort to boost a sagging offense.
"We tried a formation that was new and different for us, and it was a risk," Illini coach Janet Rayfield said. "At times it showed good signs but it also exposed us defensively. It wasn't a six-goal game from penalty box to penalty box. The difference was how they have confidence inside the box to score goals. We didn't have the team confidence we need to have inside the penalty box, and that's a problem we have to solve."
Illinois (6-7-3 overall) was outshot 19-12, including a 14-4 deficit on goal.
In women's tennis:
Illini eliminated. Chelcie Abajian, Megan Fudge and Leigh Finnegan were bounced from the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Sunday in Evanston.
All three lost in the third round of the singles main draw.
Abajian lost 6-2, 6-1 to third-seeded Samantha Murray of Northwestern.
Fourth-seeded Fudge lost to Northwestern's Lauren Lui 6-4, 6-1.
Finnegan lost to fifth-seeded Sonja Molnar of Iowa 6-1, 6-1.
"I'm proud of the way all the girls played this weekend," Illini coach Michelle Dasso said. "It was definitely worthwhile to get everyone a lot of matches."
