GLENCOE — Zach Barlow's hole-in-one on the 193-yard fifth hole was the highlight of the day for the Illini at the Windon Memorial Classic on Sunday at Skokie Country Club.
"It wasn't very dramatic," Barlow said. "I didn't see it go in, but I'll take it just the same."
It was Barlow's first ace in competition since his mid teens when he did the trick at Fox Run in St. Louis in a U.S. Open local qualifying tournament.
No. 7 Illinois moved past Michigan into first place and holds a 3-stroke lead with 20 holes to play entering the final day of play Monday. Play Sunday was suspended because of darkness.
Because of that, teams will not be re-paired for the finals, meaning Illinois will play with California and Coastal Carolina and not one of the other leaders.
"That's going to be a little different," Illinois coach Mike Small said. "Truthfully, though, that will make it easier to just focus on ourselves. Our depth means we have enough good players to hold each other up. Tomorrow we need everyone to be mentally and physically prepared because this course is so difficult that it can come up and bite you at any time."
Senior Matt Hoffman is tied for fifth place individually.
"It was a solid day," Hoffman said. "All parts of my game felt good and I had a lot of up and downs for par that really saved my rounds."
Illini, Hoosiers play to draw. Ninety minutes in regulation and 20 more minutes of overtime weren't enough for the Illinois and Indiana soccer teams to decide a winner on Sunday, as the Illini and Hoosiers battled to a 1-1 tie at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
Marissa Mykines scored the only goal for the Illini, tying the match after the Hoosiers took and early lead.
"This was a typical Big Ten battle – a tug-of-war where both teams looked dangerous at times," said Illinois coach Janet Rayfield, whose team remains winless in the conference at 0-1-2.
Illini teams fall. Illinois' two doubles teams competing at the ITA Women's All-American Championship dropped their second-round matches Sunday in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Chelcie Aabjian and Megan Fudge dropped an 8-3 decision to a duo from UNLV and Leigh Finnegan and Rachael White fell 8-6 to a team from Florida State.
