Stricker: Missin' Tiger

Since the start of the 2006 season, when Stricker ranked No. 337 in the world rankings, he has turned around his career and climbed within one rung of the top spot. Woods (12.37 avg.) maintains a comfortable gap over Stricker (7.83), who is being pushed by No. 3 Phil Mickelson (7.42) and No. 4 Lee Westwood (6.94).

"To finally see where I'm at.... it's a nice feather in your cap, especially knowing where I came from," Stricker said. "It's a great thrill. But I don't rest my laurels on that."

Happy 44th, Mike Small!

One hundred forty-three years ago today, Illinois Gov. Richard J. Oglesby signed the Griggs Bill, officially establishing the location of the Illinois Industrial University in Urbana-Champaign and giving authority to the Board of Trustees to formulate plans for the development of the new institution that eventually would come to be known as the University of Illinois. John Milton Gregory was appointed by the governor to head the new university. Milton and the board had one year to hire educators and prepare courses of study prior to the first classes that were held March 11, 1868. Four years and nearly two months later – May 8, 1872– the UI played its first athletic contest. Other memorable moments on this date:

Stricker upset in Round 1

MARANA, Ariz. — Ross McGowan of England rolled in a 30-foot par putt on the 19th hole to beat former Illini Steve Stricker, only the second time in the Match Play Championship that the No. 1 seed was beaten in the opening round.

McGowan only got into the 64-man field because Woods did not enter while on his indefinite break from golf. That also elevated Stricker to the No. 1 seed, and he became the first top seed since Woods in 2002 to lose in the first round.
