And the winner is ...
The Philadelphia Phillies. That's what former Illini Darrin Fletcher is thinking. The pride of Oakwood High School, who played for the Phillies during a 14-year major league career, weighed in on the World Series, which starts Wednesday night:
"I'll take the Phillies in seven games. I usually end up rooting for guys I played with or people I know. I got a chance to play with Jayson Werth during a spring training when we were both with the Blue Jays.
"But I do like Joe Girardi. He's a great guy, and I'd like to see him do well. There was a lot of pressure on him replacing Joe Torre.
"But I think the Phillies will do it. Charlie Manuel is a good guy, and Jayson Werth (Chatham Glenwood) is a local guy."
