IOWA CITY, Iowa — Raquel Hopton and Kaitlyn Wampler both finished at 10-over-par 226 to finish in second place and lead the Illinois women’s golf team to a runner-up finish at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate on Sunday.
The Illini finished 4 strokes behind team champion Missouri State.
Wampler closed with a third-round 74 to jump from fourth to second, while Hopton shot 79 to fall out of first place.
“Obviously, it was great that we put ourselves in position to win,” Illini coach Renee Slone said. “Unfortunately we didn’t get the job done, but we took the first step to get to that position. We need to come out firing better and a little smarter in the final round.”
Sophomore Katelin Dilger (234) tied for 15th in her season debut, and Hailey Koschmann (236) tied for 19th for the Illini.
“A runner-up finish and [after] being tied for first, we were right where we needed to be,” Slone said. “Next time we put ourselves in that position hopefully we learn from this experience.”
