CHICAGO — Former Illinois standout and three-time U.S. Olympic men’s gymnastics head coach Abie Grossfeld was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame on Wednesday in a ceremony at McCormick Place.

Grossfeld guided the 1984 U.S. Olympic men’s squad to the team gold medal and eight medals overall.

He also coached the U.S. men’s team in 1972 and 1988 Games and the U.S. national team from 1981 to ’88, during which time the squad earned its first victory against the USSR in 1982.

As an athlete, Grossfeld participated in the 1956 and 1960 Olympics and in two World Championships (1958 and 1962).

Grossfeld won four NCAA titles and was a 12-time All-American while at the UI from 1957 to ’60. He captured seven Big Ten titles and was the first gymnast to receive Illinois’ Dike Eddleman Male Athlete of the Year award in 1959.
