Twice a day — at noon and 5 p.m. — beat writer Bob Asmussen will check in with updates from Camp Rantoul. E-mail him questions at asmussen@news-gazette.com.
Here is Monday's second report:
- Johnsburg tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz, who made a commitment to Illinois earlier in the summer, attended Monday''s afternoon workout. Considered among the top players at his position in the country, Fiedorowicz surprised some with his choice, but the player said he felt comfortable with Ron Zook, the staff and the players.
- Fiedorowicz wasn't the only future Illini in attendance. Downers Grove South quarterback Chandler Whitmer and South Fulton offensive lineman Michael Heitz watched practice.
- The fields at Camp Rantoul look better than ever. They are lush and a deep green.
- Daily special teams note: kickers Matt Eller and Derek Dimke and punter Anthony Santella are now on scholarship.
- The team worked out in full pads for the first time. The temperatures are in the mid-80s, but the bright son makes it feel warmer.
