Prep sports coordinator Fred Kroner talked with Meyers Leonard in advance of Saturday's Shootout at the Hall. Among the topics: Baseball at Robinson High School.
An excerpt:
While basketball is his future, Illini recruit Meyers Leonard has a goal for this year beyond what is attached to the backboard.
"I think I'll come back and play baseball my senior year," Leonard said. "Three of my best friends play baseball and I want to play with my friends again."
Think Randy Johnson was an intimidating sight on the mound as a 6-10 major leaguer? Wait until Leonard climbs the hill and prepares to unfurl a fast ball.
"I've always been able to throw pretty hard," he said. "In Little League, everyone was scared of me."
Though he hasn't played the sport since his freshman year - when he earned a varsity letter as a pitcher - Leonard played toss during the summer.
"I can still throw a ball 100 yards in the air," he said. "When I was young, I thought I'd go to college to play baseball."
