Illini open season with victory

Freshman Gina Wiechmann won the all-around competition Sunday afternoon, leading the Illinois women's gymnastics team to a win in its season opener at Bowling Green, Ohio.

The Illini beat Bowling Green 190.35-186.6, Wiechmann also winning the floor exercise with a 9.6 and the balance beam with a 9.775.

Wiechmann totaled a 38.375 all-around, and fellow Illini freshman Phaedra Dixon was second at 37.9.

Senior Kelli Farrar won the uneven bars with a 9.725.

The UI next battles Penn State at 6 p.m. Saturday in State College, Pa.
