Tue, May 13: Illinois picks up three gymnasts

The Illinois women's gymnastics team on Monday announced the signing of three recruits for 1997-98.

Head coach Lynn Brueckman signed Carissa Ericson of Rolling Meadows, Gina Wiechmann of Clearwater, Fla., and Lisa Pellegrinetti of Palatine.

The trio joins Centennial's Susie Miles and Phaedra Dixon of Chicago, who committed to the Illini in the fall signing period.

Hecht hits academic homer.

Illinois senior pitcher Brian Hecht on Monday was named to the GTE/College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District V Baseball Team for 1997.

The Arlington Heights native is a civil engineering major with a 3.32 grade-point average. He is 6-6 for the Illini with a 3.96 earned run average in 75 2/3 innings.
