ZIONSVILLE, Ind. — Scott Langley finished second overall, and the Illinois men’s golf team opened its fall season by winning the Wolf Run Invitational on Sunday.
The Illini, who won the tournament by 13 strokes, also got top-10 finishes from Luke Guthrie and Zach Barlow — both of whom tied for seventh.
“It was a replica of last year in that it was team effort,” Illini coach Mike Small said. “It was certainly a positive start to the year.”
Illini soccer blanked. The Illini offense couldn’t break through, and “one defensive mistake at the end of the game” cost the 11th Illinois soccer team in a 1-0 loss to Washington at the Nike Portland (Ore.) Invitational.
It was the first time Illinois (3-3-1) had failed to score this season.
Illini keeper Alexandra Kapicka made two saves, but Washington’s Veronica Perez scored in the 83rd minute to end a scoreless match.
“In all honesty we made one defensive mistake at the end of the game,” Illinois coach Janet Rayfield said. “But the bottom line is we weren’t dangerous enough.”
