Points back on PGA Tour

Former Illinois golfer D.A. Points will return to the PGA Tour in 2009 after finishing in the top 25 on the Nationwide Tour’s money list this season.
Points, who played on the PGA Tour in 2005 and 2006 said he hopes to be able to stick around.

“I’ve grown a lot. I have a better understanding of what is going to make me better at my craft,” Points said. “Next year when I’m on the PGA Tour, hopefully I’ll be able to excel, not only to keep my card, but also win and become a great player out there.”

Through 66 PGA Tour events in his career, Points has $933,442 in winnings.

Goalie honored. Illini goalkeeper Alexandra Kapicka was selected to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team after earning her eighth shutout of the season in a quarterfinal game against Michigan State. The award was announced Sunday in Iowa City, Iowa, after the tournament title game.

The UI junior had five saves and held the Spartans scoreless through 110 minutes of play, including two overtimes. Michigan State prevailed in a penalty kick shootout 4-3.

In her first season as a starter, Kapicka has compiled the second-lowest goals-against average (0.73) in school history.

Big Ten cites DeBruler. Illini outside hitter Laura DeBruler was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week in volleyball Monday after recording two double-doubles last weekend.

The sophomore had 22 kills and 14 digs in a four-set victory at Iowa on Friday. One night later, DeBruler turned in a 29-kill, 13-dig performance in a five-set loss at Minnesota.

The Downers Grove native leads the Big Ten with 16 double-doubles this season, including eight in conference play.

For the weekend, DeBruler averaged 5.7 kills per set on .305 hitting.
The Big Ten award is DeBruler’s second this season and fourth of her career.
