Soccer blanked in 0-2 weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. — It was a lost weekend for the Illinois soccer team.

The No. 16 Illini lost to Minnesota 1-0 on Sunday despite outshooting the Gophers 11-5.

“We didn’t make great decisions with the ball,” UI coach Janet Rayfield said. “(The Gophers) rely on attacks to make mistakes, only playing with three back, and we played into that. That’s a hard-fighting defensive team, so their defensive effort, like Iowa’s, was tremendous.”

The Illini (9-6, 3-3 Big Ten) lost at Iowa 1-0 on Friday.

Minnesota (14-1, 4-1) scored in the 57th minute off a corner kick.

In men’s golf:
Langley lead at ISU. Scott Langley shot 3-under 67 to maintain the individual lead after two rounds of the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate in Normal.

The Illini (5-under 555) have a 3-shot lead on host Illinois State. The final round of the 15-team event is today.

Langley, who fired an opening-round 64, is at 131. Matt Hoffman (138) is fourth after a second-round 67.

In women’s tennis:
Stromberg, McCarthy shine. Illinois’ Christine Stromberg and Annie McCarthy each went 3-1 in singles and 2-2 in doubles at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston.

In men’s tennis:
Roelofse leads men. Ruan Roelofse beat teammate Dennis Nevolo to win the singles title, and the UI men took the doubles crown at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas.
