Bob's bowl forecast

The BCS pairings come out in December. We can't wait that long. Each Thursday, News-Gazette college football writer Bob Asmussen will give us his guesses:

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP

Florida vs. Texas

We're back with the Gators, especially since we now know they've got the SEC officials on their side. Texas might not even to send its best players to the Big 12 title game. The North leader now is Kansas State, which earlier this season lost to Louisiana and beat UMass by four. Yuck.

ROSE BOWL

Oregon vs. Iowa

Football experts are calling for a Southern Cal win against Oregon, which doesn't have the throwing offense that often beats the Trojans. The rain will help. So will the fans at Autzen Stadium, who are this side of crazy. The Hawkeyes can lose a game (to Ohio State) and still win the Big Ten spot in the Rose Bowl. Cool.

SUGAR BOWL

Alabama vs. Georgia Tech

You've got to figure the Crimson Tide will run out of luck in the SEC title game. Nick Saban will turn conservative, get all defensive and let Florida rally for the win in the second half. And he might even help Tim Tebow win another Heisman Trophy. Undeserved, mind you. Georgia Tech needs to replay the Miami game.

FIESTA BOWL

Penn State vs. Boise State

Joe Paterno had almost 300 wins by the time the Broncos joined Division I-A. Boise State better not try any of its usual tricks, or Joe Pa will give Chris Petersen a scolding. The idea of matching the long-time power with the up-and-comer will thrill the folks in Arizona.

ORANGE BOWL

Cincinnati vs. TCU

Cincinnati isn't out of the BCS title game. Neither is TCU. But by the looks of voting, you wonder if either team will ever be given a fair chance. They have played similar schedules and their leagues are comparable, though you might argue the bottom of the Big East is much better than the bottom of the Mountain West.
