SAVOY — Former University of Illinois sports announcer Jim Sheppard sustained minor injuries when his car left a road south of Champaign and rolled over Friday afternoon.
Champaign County sheriff's Capt. Tim Voges said Sheppard, 60, of the 1900 block of Ridge Park Drive, Urbana, was driving south on South First Street extended near 1025 N about 12:30 p.m. when he ran off the east side of the road, traveling about 600 feet through a yard. He hit a concrete foundation to an old corn crib, Voges said. His car rolled over at least two times.
Voges said Sheppard told the deputy he has diabetes and the loss of control was believed to be related to low blood sugar. No tickets were issued. Voges said two callers had reported a car swerving just before the accident.
Voges said Sheppard, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained a cut to the face and his car is considered a total loss. He was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital for treatment, where he was listed in fair condition Friday afternoon.
