It’s Sweet Sioux Tomahawk week at Memorial Stadium. Really.
The Illinois players currently hold the trophy, which goes to the winner of their game with Northwestern. They’d like to keep it beyond Saturday.
“Any time you’re playing for something like that, it just adds another element to the game,” Illinois linebacker Brit Miller said. “Last year was the first year we got it back.”
The Sweet Sioux Tomahawk sits in the players’ lounge trophy case. After Saturday’s loss to Ohio State, which cost them the Illibuck, it’s the only game trophy the Illini have left.
Illinois also plays Purdue for the Cannon Trophy. With the Boilermakers off the last two years, the Illini haven’t played for it since 2006. They lost that game at Memorial Stadium 42-31. Purdue has won the last four games between the schools, with the last Illinois win coming in 2002.
The Sweet Sioux Tomahawk will be packed up and travel to Evanston for Saturday’s game. If Northwestern wins, it will take immediate possession of the trophy.
“You’ve got to bring it with you,” Miller said.
Miller has friends on the Northwestern team, including quarterback C.J. Bacher and receiver Eric Peterman. The last thing he wants is to give his buddies the trophy.
