CHAMPAIGN — A week after winning the NCAA championship in the 5,000-meter run, Illinois junior Angela Bizzarri was named a second-team Academic All-American by ESPN the Magazine.
The Mason, Ohio, native holds a 3.55 grade-point average in molecular and cellular biology. She is the first Illinois track and field or cross-country athlete to be recognized by ESPN the Magazine since Cassie Hunt in 2006.
Bizzarri, who will run the 5,000 at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships next Friday in Eugene, Ore., was one of five Big Ten women honored by ESPN the Magazine.
