And he MAKES BAD READS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too bad you have no clue what the hell a read is.
You think its the same thing as a decision or a progression... right? Aren't they all interchangeable terms?
LOL
Might want to figure that one out before auditioning for that next OC job.
Let me make this as elementary as possible for you:
READ: Something you begin before the snap, and finish before completing your drop. The goal is to understand the coverage, and identify its weak spots.
(Cutler is very good at this... ask Mike Shannahan, he's a pretty good judge. As an opposite example, remember Kordell Stewart... he had no idea what the hell he was looking at in the secondary.)
PROGRESSIONS: Something you do immediately following your read, checking receivers in order of importance, according to your read, having the patience to move to the next when covered, and the willingness to stay in the pocket.
(Cutler is above average at this, he obviously doesn't get rattled, isn't scared to take a hit, and will run. As an opposite example, remember Chad Hutchinson or Rex Grossman... two guys with what they call "happy feet" in the pocket)
DECISIONS: Something you do immediately following your progressions, where you see a receiver you'd like to hit, weigh the risk, and decide to throw the ball to him, or throw it away)
(Cutler is below average at this... its well documented that he often makes up for bad decisions with outstanding throws, but this is his biggest area of weakness. Fortunately, his bad decisions obviously come from overconfidence and immaturity, as opposed to lack of understanding.)
Look, here is the deal...
If everyone knows you are going to throw 50+ times a game, against average competition, you're going to lose.
Throwing into a zone is a losing proposition unless of course you're Peyton Manning, have a strong OL, and run 5 receiver sets with talented receivers. Otherwise, you will throw lots of interceptions, period.
Whew. There. I hope that made it easier for you. Until you understand the difference between these terms, its unlikely that you'll ever understand anything about how to play quarterback, or football for that matter.
What can I say, I tried.
