QUOTE
For the act, Meyer will bench his star linebacker for the first half of the Gators’ game against Vanderbilt.

Repeat: one half. That penalty isn’t a joke, although the man dishing it out is acting like one.

QUOTE
Florida is begging for an adult to lead them. Meyer isn’t it when it comes to player conduct. He may be a heck of a football coach, great recruiter, perhaps even devout family man and charitable person.

I believe he is correct. Florida is one of the most classless programs in football. Meyer is known for running up the score, and letting his players act how ever they want.

I know Florida will not do anything about the situation as long as they are winning, but it sure does suck for the rest of the collegiate programs.

Just saw a replay of this on Sportscenter. Wow.

To me, right up there with the infamous Oregon punch from earlier in the year. He deliberately jammed his fingers into the guy's eyes...and not quickly either. I'm surprised he didn't come out of there with an eyeball impaled on his finger.

How the Florida thug only gets one half is beyond me. As you said, par for the Meyer course.

This and other un-sportsman like things happen all the time in a pile in football. Tebow's quote is a testament to this. The proliferation of visors on helmets is a result of eye gouging. One of our most famed players Dick Butkis was famous for this type of behavior. It's not that it's ok but painting the kid as a criminal or morally averse is a stretch.

While it would be nice for Meyer to take a stronger stance and bench him for a game, though I doubt that would have been enough for the writer. I can't say I blame him. His team is playing for the national championship every Saturday. One loss and he is out of the picture and the season is looked at as a failure. Millions of dollars are on the line and we all want him to put it in jeopardy because of poking someone in the eye.

Make the kid run. Have him carry the team bags or whatever. The truth is once the ball is snapped these guys are trying to hurt each other.

I agree with you on this. I've given up with deluding myself into thinking that only the teams I root for have nice guys and that the jerks are only on the opposing teams. If you are going to root for a team (in any sport) you have to accept that odds are there is a percentage of guys you are cheering for that are classless.

There are a lot of coaches who simply can't afford to have integrity if they want to keep their jobs. And it's because they know their fans will demand in a heartbeat they be fired the minute they stop winning; especially in the SEC. This seems to be part of our sports culture and it's kind of a shame when you think about it...

Gee. I wonder what Meyer would be saying if a Georgia player tried to do that to Teabow?

I would call the Oregon punch an emotional play. This however is totally uncalled for and this kid should be suspended for a lot longer than one half of football.

Pitiful that Meyer can be so soft on this. And shame on Teabow for not manning up and admitting that this was wrong.

Do you guys think the NCAA should start issuing the punishments? Obviously the Universities can't give the correct punishment for these assaults.

ESPN said on College Gameday today that this is worse than the Oregon player. If you trying to rip someones eyes out it should be charged as assault. Just because you have a jersey on doesn't give you an excuse to act like this. He should be out the rest of the year.

Yes. Leaving it up to universities to police themselves won't do it. Especially in leagues like the SEC where only one thing matters and nothing else. As I said in an earlier post, I can definitely see why Meyer wouldn't dish out much of a punishment for this guy. Who handles punishments in professional sports? While teams are free to hand out punishment, the league commissioner gets the final word.

I agree, it reminded me of the Oregon incident. I know some are arguing that this stuff happens all the time but when someone gets caught they ought to be punished in a big way. To me this was worse than throwing a punch.

This seems to fly in the face of all the people who claim that Meyer is a straight arrow/strict disciplinarian who's players all walk the walk or they are shown the door. This is more of a Zookian punishment, (while he was at Fla.) than what we have been led to believe would be a Meyer punishment.

It's a crime in all 50 states, not that I'd expect an elected State Attorney anywhere in Florida to do anything about it.

It's much worse than a sucker punch.

Although I'm not sure how the 2 incidents are at all similar.

Played the game for 4 years at the good old UofI. Nothing like this crap happened, someone going after a players eyes inside a helmet. He needs to be suspended BIG TIME. Saint Tebow backing him shows that he is not a saint after all...

Every tackle in a football game is a crime in all 50 states.

The NCAA has shown extreme incompetence in its ability to police recruiting or player eligibility what makes you think they would be able to handle player conduct?

I don't know who I would like to handle these issues but the NCAA is not the answer. All that's gonna do is give coaches a pass. They will suspend no one and say it's up to the NCAA.
