15-13 this year, three more wins than any Cub pitcher.

More games started, innings pitched and complete games than any Cub pitcher this year, too, with the ROCKIES. And an All-Star nod.

Time to recognize Marquis as what he is: a valuable 4 or 5 guy who eats innings while generally keeping you in the game, as his 94-83 lifetime record indicates

Edit: this one is for the wannabe GMs:

Jon Garland lifetime: .534 Win Pct., 4.42 ERA, 1.387 WHIP.
Marquis: .531 Win Pct., 4.48 ERA, 1.418 WHIP.

2008 Salary: Garland $12 million, Marquis $6.4 million.

Someone told me last weekend, that Marquis has never missed the playoffs in the big leagues. Could that be possible? They said it was 10 or so straight years of making the playoffs.

I know he has played with at least four different teams. If that is the case, it's pretty impressive.

I always liked the guy with the Cubs. Made all or most of his starts, and ate up a lot of innings. I know he wasn't great, but look at the Cubs this year, they had every starter miss some time. A guy that can make every start (and not completely suck) can be very valuable.

I'm a Cub fan, and as Cub fans do, I'm searching for even more ways to feel bad about this season, and I want company.

No he hasn't. He hasn't pitched every time he made the playoffs, he hasn't even been on the playoff roster every time, but every team Jason Marquis has ever played on has made the playoffs.

Considering he has been on 4 teams in 10 season and is a thoroughly mediocre player, that is as remarkable a statistic as any in sports. There is absolutely no explaining it.

Sorry, I phrased that wrong.....

Was told that each team he has been on has made the playoffs. Not that he necessarily pitched in the playoffs.

That looks like it may be right. Not sure if Atl made it in all of his years with them.

Seriously, what kind of response are you looking for? Who the eff cares about Jason Marquis and his second half collapses? There is a reason he did not make post-season rosters in Chicago AND St. Louis, he is not that good.

Thanks Parrot. That's what I was trying to say, as someone told it to me.

That was my reaction....there really is no way to explain it. I really couldn't believe it.

Makes sense. I thought you were a Cards fan. My bad.

His ERA was down (4.04), his WHIP was better but mediocre (1.38) and he had his second highest strikeout total of his 10 season career (111).

But, he had a potent Rockies lineup supporting him and helping him rack up 16 wins.

Still, pitching that well in Colorado is impressive.

I still wouldn't want him in Chicago though.

Didn't we already know this? He will give you about 30 starts a year. 10 of them will be games that the team should win unless the offense tanks, 10 of them will be games where the team has a chance to win, and 10 of them will be games where they will need an offensive explosion and a strong bullpen play to win. On a good team, that should equal 12 wins, and on a very good team, it should be about 15.

Despite going 5-8 since the all star break (including an ERA over 6.00 since September 1st), Jason Marquis had a nice year. He is a decent option for a 5th starter who can eat up innings. That's really all he is.

As for the Cubs, I'd rather not have Marquis. I don't want a 6 million dollar #5 like Marquis when I could fill the 5 hole with a kid with real potential like Randy Wells.

Illinimac
4th and 5th starters are way down the list of reasons the Cubs didn't make the post-season this year. I'm not pining for a guy who is 2 over .500 as a starting pitcher. If he's the pitcher of record that many times it just means his bullpen saves more wins for him and when he loses it's because his offense doesn't come back after he leaves the game. Corner outfielding, second base, and late inning relief are the Cubs' major problems.

Go Indians...at least until Friday.

I was hoping for a sweep of the Yankees, but Ill take a four-game series.

Cant WAIT until this weekend.
