Does anyone feel betrayed? (long)

I remember the excitement of the Rose Bowl season, the big wins, the OSU, WI, and PSU wins in particular. I remember the optimism going into the 08 season and the deflated feeling of not becoming bowl eligible when I would have bet money that we would have. I remember the buildup to this season and the optimism that this team would clear the bowl eligible hurdle even with the difficult schedule. I had us minimally at 6-6 this season. Now I look back at so many games lost that seemed to be lost because of a coaching staff that simply did not get it done. Losing to IU and Ohio (not OSU) in 06 now appear as an omen that Zook was in over his head. The close games lost in 06, some to inferior teams, were temporarily forgotten by the magic of the Rose Bowl season. Now, the coaching mistakes from that season can be seen in light of the failures of the 08 and 09 seasons. We knew this season was going to be tough because of the ridiculous schedule the AD put together, but, to be totally uncompetitive for 1/2 the season? Zook's coaching seems to be much like the way he wins games (when he does), unpredictable. He constantly loses to inferior teams and then once in awhile pulls a surprise that no one is expecting, almost on the intensity of his emotion and energy rather than clear headed coaching strategies. I have been watching Illinois FB since 1967 when I was a freshman. I got hooked. I am an avid fan. I have seen lots of losses and experienced disappointing seasons. However, under Zook the losses seem so disappointing because the losses for me, more than with any other coaching staff, point to poor coaching or bad decisions. It is easier to lose when you are outmanned by the opposition's talent. It is another thing to lose when your talent is equal to or better than the opposition. The latter is Zook's MO. It is almost as if Zook has fooled the Illini nation. One almost believes the team is going to have success and then the pin picks the balloon and pop. And, he has succeeded on a mass scale. Consider the sold out games or almost sold out games this season with a team that performed badly week after week. I don't fault the players--never have, never will. They bust their butts to have success and they must do what the coaches say including running plays that are poor choices. And their collective hurt at losses has to be worse than even the most dedicated fan. But, I do fault Zook for all the games that we lost because of the coaching, whether through game day decisions, terrible time management, bad schemes, lack of player development, or misuse of players' abilities including rotating too many players at the running back position. And I don't see this changing regardless of how long he is here. I have come to the conclusion that Zook simply is not head coaching material. He has repeatedly proved that is the case in five years at IL and previous years at FL. The best example is the end of the IU game this season. No time outs were called as we marched down the field and ended up at the one yard line and not scoring because time ran out. It is just inexplicable and it is one of many inexplicable decisions that have been made during five years of playing Zook-ball. And the biggest disappointment is that he teases the Illini Nation into thinking there will be success, much as a used car salesman might do. Maybe my disappointment is great because I really want Illinois to win in FB and as the years pass I will not have as many years left to watch and hope as the younger fans, like my grown kids. Regardless, it is no fun to lose and it is worse when one feels betrayed in the process.

Reminder for Guenther Apologists

Illinois just finished the B10 2-6 and will not make a bowl game. Iowa finished 2-6 in the B10 3 years ago and played against Colt McCoy and his Texas Longhorns in the Alamo Bowl. How is that possible, you ask. Well, Iowa played a D-IAA school, Syracuse, Iowa State and Northern Illinois out of conference. Add those 4 wins to the 2 wins in the B10 and Iowa had 6 wins, enough to be bowl eligible. It's a pretty simple formula, yet for some reason, it eludes the Football Guy.

You see, no matter how bad the coaching is or how injured you are or how big of a bust a recruiting class is, 2 wins is usually attainable in the B10, just pick up 4 other cheap wins and you are, in most years, going bowling.

6. The Illinois program:

I suspect a lot of Florida fans have relished this a little because it has not been a great season for the Zooker. A 1-6 start wasn't what a lot of experts had in mind when they touted the Illini as one of the sleeper teams to watch. Vegas loved Illinois, so did Phil Steele (19th). What was supposed to be an explosive offense led by four-year starting QB Juice Williams and a huge, athletic bunch of receivers didn't score more than 17 points in a game against any FBS program until Halloween.

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index...d_front_xxx_xxx

Worst case coaching scenario

Just considering the coaching landscape and had this thought...

Jim Harbaugh may be the hottest coach in the country this side of Brian Kelly. He's a michigan guy. If you can win at Stanford, imagine what he can do with Mich's resources...It is possible that he could be in the Maize and blue at this time next year.

Lots of folks have front-butt getting his balloon popped at the end of the year. If so, I look for ND to make a major splash of the Jon Gruden variety or at least a run at Brian Kelly. It is possible that one of them could be coaching under touchdown Jesus at this time next year.

So, two of our recruiting rivals (one of whom is an actual rival) could take gigantic steps forward in the next 365 days and we are stuck with "Happy the Recruiting Clown" for another year.

Thoughts on the chances of this happening or can I come back in from the ledge?

What a waste

Now that we’re “officially” eliminated from a bowl, I’d like to voice my complaint. There’s an old saying you win as a team and lose as a team. That maybe true, but in my eyes we LOST football games due to ONE PERSON!!! OC Mike Schultz. If you’re a fan and want to scout Illinois it’s easy. Run the ball 97% of the time and throw it the other 3% a little sarcasm but not much. Zook has lived with Juice for four years, he knows he can’t throw, that’s why when he’s in there along with Eddie McGee we RUN and RUN and RUN some more. The play calling isn’t even close to the same when Jacob enters the game. Running the ball is great but you have to throw it at sometime to WIN. I’m not 100% sure, but in the first half I think we ran the ball EVERY TIME on 1st downs. We were down 21-3 in the 4th qtr and we were still trying to run the ball. Jacob is a QB, the kid can throw it, and receivers don’t have to fall over trying to catch them like when Juice is trying to throw it. Let’s face it he can’t do it, were a running team only when he plays now.
Last week it was nice seeing Benn catch a ball in stride, same with Cumberland. Eddie came in the game today and he did the same thing Schultz asked Jacob to do hand it off so why make the change? The one deep ball Eddie threw it was 10 in front of Benn and you saw his frustrations. Speaking of that, I’m tired of people asking what happened to Benn, NOTHING JUICE CAN’T GET THE BALL TO HIM! You know the players are tired of it, but won’t say anything. WHO cares Jacob was picked off at the end of the half, how many times have we seen Juice get picked off or Eddie to fumble like he did today. Take the handcuffs off the kid and let him THROW IT. During the Minn game last week at one time we ran the ball 6 times in a row. Jacob comes in and the game changes. If this kid was our QB three weeks ago we win more or more competitive or if they throw the ball downfield earlier we win today. The color guy said it on TV today, it’s about time they (Illinois) looked downfield. Also I know Jacob may not be as fast as Juice or Eddie, but he’s not bad.
