Talk with football beat writer Bob Asmussen after the Illinois-Missouri game

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:31 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Welcome to another gameday chat. I just got back into the press box after the postgame interviews. I'm going to answer a handful of questions now, then take a short break to write some of my stories.
Let's get to the questions.

Optimistic from South Side, Illinois — 04:32 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Bob,

While Scheelhaase looked respectable for his first game, I can't help but think that the comparisons to Juice Williams are inevitable. Tell me something that Nate has that Juice did not when it comes to the passing game. Thanks and Go Illini!

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:32 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Optimistic,

I think it's clear he has better touch. He didn't show that all the time on Saturday, but I believe it's there. And you do have to give Missouri some credit for its defensive work in the second half. The Tigers picked up the pace.

Mark from Champaign, IL — 04:33 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Hey Bob, thanks for doing these chats! Do you think there is any concern over the fact that Scheelhaase had so many passes blocked at the line of scrimmage?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:34 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Mark,

I think that's a concern for all college coaches. Blaine Gabbert, who is a really big guy, had a couple of passes batted too. I think that might have been a first-game deal for both guys. No matter how much you practice, you need to get the feel for the game. If Nathan gets four or five passes batted against Southern Illinois, then it becomes a concern for the coaches. But for now, those are teaching points. And you don't know what happened to the offensive line on those plays either.

John R from Moilin, IL — 04:35 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Bob,
Thanks for the chat. Of course the lose hurt but what was the over all feeling in the locker room? Also the small thing that cost us the game can they still be fixed?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:36 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

John R.,

That was the general consensus. Nathan said nobody is hanging their head after the loss, but they are disappointed. That's about what you would think. They felt like they had a chance to win the game and let it slip away. But Missouri was dominant in the second half on both sides of the ball.
The players and coaches want to win. Period. A 10-point loss is meaningless to them. And it should be meaningless.

Robert Phipps from E. Lansing, Mi — 04:37 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

I have and do not care for Missouri's coach I think he is a jerk! Having said that, why did he kick field goal with seocnds left to increase margin of victory. Is he a true jerk or does he just hate Zook?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:38 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Robert,

He had to. He was only up seven. If his team gives the ball back, it can still be tied. I didn't have a problem with that. What I don't like is when a team is up 14 or so and scores a late touchdown against a lesser team. But that wasn't the case here. I think he did the right thing.

Scott D. from Lebanon, PA — 04:38 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Nice job by the defensive line and linebackers today. Nate Bussey had some great highlight hits, but who would get your vote as defensive player of the game?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:39 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Scott,

I'll go with Steve Hull. A week ago, he was a receiver. Saturday, he had seven tackles as a safety. And he's going to get better. Ron Zook called him "magnificent."

Galloping Ghost from C-U, IL — 04:39 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Bob,

Love the chats. I though the tackling and pass rush (for the first have anyway) looked much better from a year ago. Is this all due to Koenning? Your thoughts?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:40 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Galloping,

I think you start the credit with Koenning, who gets after his guys when they don't make the plays in practice. But I think you have to credit the players, too. They put themselves out there and, as you wrote, had a decent day.
If you had told me before the game that Missouri scored 23 points, I would have told you Illinois won. Or was close. And that was the case.

Tim from Champaign, IL — 04:40 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Missouri looked very average today yet Illinois put up a goose egg in the second half. Please explain again why Ron Zook received an extension after a 5-7 season in 2008? Apparently Guenther rewards failure.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:42 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Tim,

At that point, it was about trying to keep recruiting in place. If you plan to keep your coach, and at that point Guenther certainly did, then you like to have the contract be out four to five years. There was no raise and I think Guenther has made it clear that the length of the contract isn't as important as the performance on the field.

Zeke from Scottsdale, AZ — 04:42 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

What happened at halftime? Our offense came out weak and predictable....interesting to hear the co-ordinators take on this cause I am tired of too many years of Zook's excuses

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:45 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Zeke,

First, give Missouri some credit. You have to think the Tigers heard an earful from their coaches.
There were breakdowns on both sides in the second half. The coaches admitted it. In some cases, the better player won the battle. And they pointed to their guys for not making the plays.
To me, the biggest series was the start of the third quarter. If Illinois scores on the opening drive, the pressure really goes on the Tigers. Instead, it was a three and out that set up the Missouri comeback.

Bill From Ohio from East Liverpool, Ohio — 04:45 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Bob;
Ths game was on Fox Pittsburgh. It looks like their best linebacker is Ian Thonas. I did not notice Martez making many stops.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:46 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Bill,

Glad you got to see it. Ian Thomas had a very good game. Martez Wilson didn't play his best game. Ron Zook said Missouri's offense isn't best suited to Martez's strengths.

Charley from Bellingham, WA — 04:46 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Does this performance affect your current 5-7 record prediction?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:47 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Charley,

Not a bit. I thought Illinois would lose to Missouri and it did. I think the offense isn't as good as I thought it might be early and the defense might be better. So, it's a wash.

Dave from Urbana, IL — 04:47 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Hey Bob, After another loss to Missouri will you ever gain the courage to do some real journalism and write something negative about Ron Zook? Look at the facts for once.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:49 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Dave,

A bit harsh, but I like you to share your opinions. My goal in covering Ron Zook and all coaches is to be fair. I don't think we've been at all shy about writing the facts about the team. Ron Zook needs to win this year to keep his job. I think that's a fair statement. Has he been everything Illinois hoped for, of course not. I think he would admit to that.

Jim from Kenney, IL — 04:50 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Is it me or do Zook's expressions and demeanor suggest he sees the writing on the wall? He can't be happy knowing that his coaching abilities were essentially cast into doubt by Guenther. Do you agree?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:51 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Jim,

I wish I had watched him more during the game (I'll see the TV copy when I get home). But he hasn't shown that negative body language at practice or during interview sessions. He's uptight the closer the games get, but that's his normal state.
I don't believe Ron Zook will give up or go down without trying everything he can think of. Will it work? Too early to tell. But he should win the next two games.

John R from Moline, IL — 04:52 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Bob,
I don't in anyway thing that a 10 point loss is good but the team start is something to build on.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:53 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

JOhn R,

I think a lot of people will agree with you. Some will see only the loss and not care about the way the team got to that point.
Illinois played better than I thought it would going into the game. I really thought it could be a 40-point Missouri win given all of the trouble for the Illinois secondary. Instead, Illinois had a good half and could have won the game.

Todd from Lincoln, Il — 04:54 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Hey Bob do you supposed people like Dave will always blame zook? I mean seriously how is it his fault? He didnt fumble or throw an interception, our red shirt freshmen did. He will learn and get better i have no worries there and i think our D was better than most people ( including you ) thought. Your thoughts? oh and yes i know everyone has a right to their opinion, i just hope that ILLINI fans could be smarter!

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:56 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Todd,

The coach is an easy target in every program. Heck, there are people mad at Jim Tressel. That's insane to me, but again you have to have your right to an opinion. It's what makes our country so cool.
Nathan Scheelhaase faced a difficult opponent and played about like I thought he would. He will cut the turnovers and play better the next game. He's that kind of kid (plus, the opponent isn't as good). I want to see how he reacts against Ohio State. And I want to see how the defense plays against the Buckeyes. That will tell you a lot about the current team.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 04:57 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Wow, great questions. I'm going to take about a 20-minute break to get a story started. Then, I'll be back. Stick with me if you can.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:37 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

I'm back. Sorry about that, but there are folks back in Champaign waiting for my stuff.
I'll answer 10 or so and then take another quick break. Again, thanks for your patience.

jkbigstuff from Sarasota, FL — 05:37 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Hey Bob:
I would like to recommend that you speak slower when you do your post game video. Another 12 seconds is still quite reasonable in total vid length.

The Illini played much smarter, and tougher today which was good to see. Great tackling - no clueless celebrations - never stop effort. well done.

Nathan appears to be a Juice type QB: run and maybe a good throw. Defenses will play a run-blitz to stop Nathan which jams the line of scrimmage for the running backs. When they can't go down field 10, 15, 20 yards to strech the defense then to offensive is sim to last years problems.

I think we need our passing QB's in the game and let the great collection of running backs move the chains on the ground. By game 4 we should now if this is indeed a limitation in 2010.

Defense and special teams were so much better today. Thanks team and thanks coaches! Go Illini

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:39 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

JK,

Thanks for the pointer on the video. Obviously, I've got a face for newspapers. But I appreciate the critique and will try to slow down next week.

All good points.

GHD from Pullman, WA — 05:39 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Nathan threw 3 interceptions, fumbled and had many passes swatted. Why didn't Chandler Whitmer replace him when he was playing so very poorly and not connecting with receivers?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:41 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

GHD,

It is Nathan Scheelhaase's offense to run until the coaches think there is no other option. I'm not sure who would have been the second quarterback in the game. Chandler is tied with Miles Osei on the depth chart.
Getting one quarterback ready to play is hard enough. I don't see the backups getting into the game unless there is an injury or a blowout.
On the connection with the receivers, we don't know who was at fault.

Stating the Obvious from DeWitt, IL — 05:41 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Nobody's mentioned anything about Leshoure. This guy is going to be the most underrated player in the Big Ten this year.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:42 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Stating,

He had a big game. The best thing about him is that he gets 3 or 4 yards after contact. I kept telling Marcus Jackson that he gained 2 yards on plays where he could have lost 3. And Missouri is good against the run.
Here's a case where I think Scheelhaase's running helps Leshoure. And vice versa.

Missouri Jim from Springfield, IL — 05:42 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Missouri fan here, thought the Illini looked better than I expected. Tell me what you think of my Tigers. I thought they looked pretty poor an think it could be a long season for them in the Big 12. What are your thoughts about the tigers?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:44 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Missouri Jim,

I wasn't impressed in the first half, but was extremely impressed in the second. Maybe this version of the Tigers will be like that. But it also could be the first game troubles.
I want to see what Missouri does the next time it plays a reasonable team. And that will be Colorado on Oct. 9. I think Missouri is definitely a bowl team and could be more.

Bill Stephenson from Fort Lauderdale, Florida — 05:44 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Seems like we would have a better chance starting a senior at quarterback, who had some good games in the past, rather than a redshirt freshman who has never played a down. If I were Zook and my job was on the line I think I would have opted for experience

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:45 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Bill,

I assume you are talking about Eddie McGee. I think the coaches considered it, but decided Nathan was the better option. Based on what I've seen on the field and in practice, I agree.

Skeptical from Chambana, il — 05:45 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Did Martez Wilson play today? (sarcasm) He looks lost, lost, lost, lost, lost

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:46 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Skeptical,

He had a nice play when he caused the fumble, but I'd agree he struggled the rest of the day. It will be interesting to see how he performs in the next month. He's got talent. Nobody ever questions that.

FloridaIllini from Mount Dora, Fl — 05:46 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

After watching the beating Mr. QB took I have serious doubts as to his ability to get through this season- he's pretty slight to be running this much- your thoughts?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:48 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Floridaillini,

There were a couple of times where I thought he might stay down, but he popped back up. He might be one of those guys who can take a pounding and avoid major injuries. He is very, very tough and smart enough most times to get out of bounds. That might be a saving combination.

Tristen from Bloomingdale, marens brother — 05:48 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Bob, The coach isn't just an easy target, he is the one making millions of dollars to win football games. This is not DIII, this is big time football with big consequences. If Northwestern can be successful then Illinois can, don't blame the fans for getting tired of losing.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:50 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Tristen,

I'm not blaming the fans. Of course, you have the right to get upset with the coach, the players, the AD. I'd like you to take it easy on me, but I'll take the critiques too.

One thing I've believed since I moved to Illinois is that the football program can be consistently good. It hasn't happened yet.

Kevin from Liberty, IL — 05:50 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Hi Bob,

All in all, a decent start. I just wish we would schedule like Indiana to get some momentum. Any injuries of note?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 05:51 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

Kevin,

Nothing of note. Jason Ford had a sore thumb, which was why he didn't carry the ball much in the second half. But that was it.

Dan from Chicago, IL — 05:51 PM on Sat, 09/04/2010

If Illinois plays like they did in the first half, 6 wins is very reachable, don't you agree? While there are no such things as moral victories, today was certainly a step in the right direction.
