Talk to the Voice of the Illini Brian Barnhart

Brian Barnhart (moderator) — 10:59 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Good morning!

Time to get ready to head to St.Louis tomorrow.

Lets get the chat going today.

Justin from Champaign, IL — 10:59 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

I was wondering if the radio broadcast are synced to the TV broadcast for the football games. I love listening to you do the games but also like to see the action. Thanks and GO ILLINI.

Brian Barnhart (moderator) — 11:04 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Justin,

Thanks for the question! We used to be able to synch up the radio with the TV broadcasts when games were televised mostly on cable or free TV.
These days...so many people have satellite TV that it is almost impossible to match the signal up because of the length of delay between a radio signal and a satellite TV feed.
I do know there are companies that sell devices that can synch up the broadcast in your own home.
If you want..you can go to the internet and just type in something like "synch radio and tv" and you should be able to find it. I dont think it is that expensive either.
Good luck!

Illinigator from Gainesville , Fl — 11:04 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Brian, Weber says he would like to go 8 or 9 deep, if this is so, who isn't gooing to get much playing time? Who are the 10, 11 and 12th players right now who aren't going to get much playing time?

Brian Barnhart (moderator) — 11:10 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Illinigator,

The one thing that appears to be the case with this year's Illini basketball team is that competition for playing time is going to be something to watch.
If you figure your starters to be Tisdale, Davis, McCamey, Richardson and Richmond...then you have Griffey, Paul, Cole and Bertrand waiting in the wings. That is 9 deep right there. And how do you work in Leonard and Head?
Really good question. Fall practice is going to be fun to watch as Bruce Weber sorts all this out. My guess is that they will maybe have to go to a 10-man rotation. We will see.
I will tell you...it is a good problem to have though.

Charley from Bellingham, WA — 11:11 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Who do you think is the 'winner' and 'loser' of the B10 new divisions announced yesterday?

Brian Barnhart (moderator) — 11:19 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Charley,

I wasnt sure what to think when the Big Ten Divisions came out... but I was hoping that when the dust had cleared that fans (including me) would be able to mentally picture who is in what division. I dont think they planned it this way... but if you draw a line from south of Lincoln, Nebraska to north of State College, PA...the division breakdown is basically a North-South divide. The only exception is that Madison,WI is further north than Evanston, IL. Other than that...it pretty much is a straight North-South dividing line
North: Michigan/MSU/NW/Minn/Iowa/Nebraska
South:Penn State/OSU/Indiana/Purdue/Indiana/Wisconsin

I think the Illini got a break. They get to play Indiana, Purdue and Northwestern every year(doesnt guarantee anything..but I like that arrangement better than others). They also have a pretty good record against Ohio State in the last 2 decades.
Michigan State got put in a division with Nebraska, Michigan and Iowa. They will play those teams every year. That could be tough.

Perry from Watseka, IL — 11:23 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Mr Barnhart
Do you keep in touch with Howard Griffith? I cant wait to see himat the SIU game

Brian Barnhart (moderator) — 11:25 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Perry,
Yes I talk to Howard once in a while. Usually at Camp Rantoul or in Chicago at the Big Ten Media Days.
I am so happy to have him in town for the SIU game. Hopefully we can have him on at halftime of that game to talk about his big day against the Salukis all those years ago.

Illini1973 from Belleville, ILL...ini — 11:26 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

I read (between the lines) in the interview with RG he stated 1. He expects more FB victories than last year (i.e., 4 or more) and 2. That giving coaches 2 yr contracts is 'customary' in the business to provide them income should they be looking for work the second year. Several people on the ILLINIHQ.com staff have stated they believe (barring a total collapse) that Zook and staff are here for next year also. Your thoughts?

Brian Barnhart (moderator) — 11:32 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Illini 1973,
I believe the current setup is a 2-year arrangement. Some of it has to do with financial arrangments (paying Petrino and Koenning for 2 years was an incentive for them to come in the first place). Plus if a change had been made after last season...the athletic department would have been looking at a buyout...plus new money for a new head coach.
I think everyone involved with the program is excited to see how the new coordiantors work out. I know that Ron Zook appreciates the hard work those guys have put in and respects the success that both Petrino and Koennig have had in the past. Both of those guys were considered "top-shelf" coaches.

KB from Decatur, IL — 11:34 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Brian,
I was wondering, with the division of the Big Ten into divisions now, how basketball may be effected by this.

Brian Barnhart (moderator) — 11:35 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

KB,
No...the divisions only affect football.
Nebraska joining in basketball might lead to some shifting in the number of conference basketball games...and will also slightly change the way the Big Ten Tournament works...but there should not be any divisions in basketball.

Illini in Badger City from Madison, WI — 11:35 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

What does the divisions do to basketball scheduling? Are there guaranteed home and away series or is it random? I am wondering because it seems like the Illini are in a much tougher division?

Brian Barnhart (moderator) — 11:36 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Illini in Badger City,

See above. Divisions will have no effect on basketball and the Olympic sports.
Say hi to Bucky Badger for me!

Robert from Louisville, ky — 11:37 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

After the game is over. What AM station can we listen to for post game coverage for Illinois leaving St. Louis, Mo. I picked up the Mo feed but want an AM station for Illini coverage.
Thanks.

Brian Barnhart (moderator) — 11:46 AM on Thu, 09/02/2010

Robert,
Our affiliate in St. Louis is 590-AM KFNS. Not sure how much postgame programming they'll carry but it's worth a shot.
Going to have to wrap it up. Sorry for the questions I didn't get to. Talk to you Saturday from St. Louis.
