Ask beat writer Bob Asmussen about the Illinois football team

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:31 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Welcome back to another chat.

Before I get to the questions, I want to answer one from Monday. I've got a partial list of the coaches and which special teams they are working with. Jeff Brohm has the punt return. Paul Petrino is handling the kickoff return. Vic Koenning has the punt team and Ron West is working with the punt returns and kickoffs. Chip Long is with the kickoff and punt teams.
You'll notice that the Joe Gilbert and Keith Gilmore aren't listed. They work with their linemen while the special teams are going on, though there are a few lineman who are participating with the special teams.
Now, off to the questions.

James Davis from McElroy, TX — 12:32 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

One of of the boards, a poster said that offensive lineman Simon C is looking really good in practice.

can you confirm? are the freshmen OLs getting a lot of reps?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:33 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

James,

Thanks for making me only write Simon C. I'll have a chance to mess up his last name later. Simon and Michael Heitz are competing for a second-team spot at tackle. And Joe Gilbert said Monday the young guys are playing well. It's very hard for linemen to play as freshmen, but it has happened here in recent years (Corey Lewis, Jeff Allen, Hugh Thornton).

Jordan from Buffalo, NY — 12:34 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Nathan made some bad throws during the scrimmage Sat night, under throwing wide open Hull and making a jump pass. Shades of juice . . pls tell me he won't make those same mistakes as Juice!

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:36 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Jordan,

Remembering back to Juice's first camp, he had the same kind of struggles. But probably worse. He didn't have the advantage of a redshirt season either.
To me, Nathan is a better passer at this stage in his career than Juice was. I think he has better touch and accuracy. His arm, of course, isn't as strong.

BigToe from Pana, Illinois — 12:36 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Bob - Since the Big Ten Network was at Camp Rantoul yesterday watching & evaluating the Illini did you get to visit with Griffith, DiNardo & Resvine? If so, did you sucker punch Dinardo for consistantly dissing the Illini? And does the BTN bus have a cowcatcher and mud tires for when they visit Iowa?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:39 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Big Toe,

Very funny stuff at the end. Of course, we have farms in Illinois as well. And we like to eat the food from those farms. But I understand you are poking fun at our beloved neighbors to the west.
I talked to Howard and Dave Revsine on the phone. They were getting dinner at Subway in Rantoul and I was getting ready for our radio show in Champaign.
Coach DiNardo has always been helpful to The News-Gazette. I understand he has been hard on Illinois, but I don't think he says things he doesn't believe. And I don't think he has an agenda against Illinois.

Jimmy from Dallas, TX — 12:39 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

I heard you hit it off with the blogger from ALionEye at the scrimmage, did he ask for any advice when interviewing players?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:42 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Jimmy,

Bob used to work in the sports department and is a good guy. We've bumped into each other over the years, mostly at football practices.

He doesn't need any help from me with interviewing. He does a fine job. He reminded me that he once helped me cover an Illinois basketball game, going into the opponent locker room to get quotes.

R.P. Kraemer from Paris, IL — 12:42 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

"Linebacking should be solid if Martez meets Zook's expectations (Koenning wasn't thrilled with him Saturday)" - Loren chat.
Specifically, what was Loren referring to regarding Koenning not being thrilled with Martez's performance Saturday? In your write up you mentioned that "he showed it (not being concerned about the injury) by running around and chasing after the quarterbacks and running backs.", but made no mention of the new DC being less than thrilled about his overall performance. So, was he blowing coverages? Missing tackles? Out of position? Thanks in advance.

Also, how did Michael Buchanan look in the Bandit role? I have felt since I saw him in last years scrimmage he is going to do some big things before he leaves Illinois if he can just bulk up a little.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:47 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

R.P.,

Unfortunately, Loren and I talked to Coach Koenning at different times after Saturday's scrimmage. Koenning was less specific with me about Martez. He was very down about the defensive performance, but I think he cheered up after realizing the stuff was fixable.

To me, the most important part of the scrimmage for Martez Wilson was that he was on the field. Mistakes are to be expected for a guy who hasn't had contact in a year.

I thought Buchanan played OK. I think it's hard to gauge the front four in the scrimmage because the quarterbacks aren't live. Like it or not, they can't play with the same aggressiveness. But I do agree that Buchanan has a tremendous upside.

Scott from Urbana, IL — 12:47 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

What is your opinion of the work you've seen in camp so far? Can this team get back to leading the Big Ten in rushing?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:51 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Scott,

I think the effort has been as good as I've seen in years. You can trace that to two things: lack of success in 2009 and the new coaching staff. There is more energy and the players don't need to be pushed as much as maybe the past couple of teams.
The execution is getting better, but with young players in key positions, there are going to be mistakes. The coaches have made it clear they don't like it.
Illinois has talented running backs and the offensive line can be good. The starting linemen have to stay healthy. If that happens, I think the running game can finish among the top four in the Big Ten.

Andrew from Carmel, Indiana — 12:51 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Bob-
Open-ended question: The Illini will win six or more games if....

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:52 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Andrew,

Nathan Scheelhaase plays like a sophomore (possible) and the defense produces more turnovers than the offense allows.

Luke from Olney, IL — 12:52 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Is Green truly 100%? He looked pretty good pullin away from the D during the scrimmage, and how dangerous could him and Hawthorne be returning kickoffs?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:53 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Luke,

I think that run gave you the answer on Justin Green's health. He said he's almost all the way back. You're right about the combination of Green and Hawthorne as returners. Ron Zook said Monday he wants to see great improvement in that area and likes the work so far.

Steve from Ft. Lauderdale, FL — 12:53 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Does Aikens look like he can play corner at a high level?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:54 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Steve,

That's a tough call. I don't think he is a starter with this team at corner. But can he be the third guy? Definitely. I still see him as more of a safety. I think the coaches are getting him ready to play both spots. That seems like a good plan.

Dr. Phil from Orland Park, IL — 12:55 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Bob, thanks for taking our Illini questions during these chats. My son is trying to convince me to meet him in St. Louis (good title for a musical) for this year's Mizzou game. After attending the last two years, especially last year's debacle and driving back in the rain to Chicagoland, can you give me three solid reasons for going this time? No possibilities, just straight, solid reasons for going. Also, in your coaches who have not won a title segment, I think Tommy Tuberville and, of course, your favorite, Mike Leach, should be considered.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:57 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Dr. Phil,

Good points about the coaches. Both should be on that list.
Reasons to go to St. Louis that don't include The Hill and Ted Drewes:
1. Last time at the Edward Jones Dome, Nathan Scheelhaase was the winning quarterback. He might just come out and play like Blaine Gabbert did a year ago.
2. Illinois running game. It's capable of keeping the defense off the field and taking the pressure off of Scheelhaase.
3. Terry Hawthorne. He didn't have a big role in last year's game. He will this time. And he'll be playing right across the river from him hometown with a whole bunch of fans in the stands. I have a feeling he is going to have a big game.

Jim from Peoria, IL. — 12:57 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

I remember the fall scrimmages for Mike White's best teams. The defense always dominated ever though the offense was good during the season. We don't have a good offense, what we have right now is a horrible defense. Your thoughts on my take? Jim

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:59 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Jim,

You might be right. I don't think we'll know for sure until the Missouri game. The guys on defense are still learning. There is plenty of inexperience. And guys returning from injury. So, to say the defense is behind right now seems accurate. But the games don't start for almost three weeks. A lot can happen between now and then.

Vernon from St. Paul, Minnesota — 12:59 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

With all the preseason rankings out, Illinois is at or near the bottom in practicly every catergory offense and defense. Sounds like another long season again, if so will this finally be the year that Zook is let go? Who are potential candidates to turn the program around with Nebraska coming to Big Ten next year and how long will it be for us to be competitive in the alignment that's coming?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:01 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Vernon,

I strongly believe that Ron Zook and his staff will be back in 2011. All of the assistants have two-year contracts, meaning it would cost the school a small fortune to fire everybody. I think Ron Guenther sees this as a two-year deal at the least. The only way that changes is if the team wins one or two games and isn't competitive in the bulk of the games. But I don't see that happening.

Mike from Potomac, Illinois — 01:01 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Good Afternoon Bob. I would like to hear your thoughts on Juston Green's camp so far. Thanks

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:02 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Mike,

Justin has played well. He's a good change of pace from the bigger backs. He's got great speed and good hands. I see him as a threat out of the backfield on short passes. And I think he will help Illinois on returns.

John from San Diego, Cal — 01:02 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Hey Bob, With the secondary, especially the safeties, looking a bit iffy in the scrimmage, have there been any plans thrown around to move someone like Jack Ramsey or Justin Green to the defensive side of the ball?

Didn't Terry Hawthorne play safety in HS? Maybe he could take a few snaps there. I know the reason Green committed here was because he was going to play RB, but as a Top 10 CB coming out of HS, I wish the coaches would move him for maybe just this year, then he could go back to the backfield when he isn't buried on the DC.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:04 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

John,

I don't anticipate anybody moving from receiver to safety. And I doubt Terry Hawthorne will move to safety because the coaches see him as a potential lockdown corner. If he is able to do that, it makes everybody else's job easier.
I would be stunned if Justin Green moved to defense for the reasons you mention. Plus, I think he could be a major asset to the offense. You've got to score points too.

Chad from Cincinnati, OH — 01:04 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Sounds like the bigger weakness is on the defensive side this year if you listen to Coach Koenning. What's your take? Should I plan on crying in my PBR or will I be pleasantly surprised?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:05 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Chad,

No matter what happens, you shouldn't cry in your PBR. But the defense is the much bigger question mark at this point. The coaches are trying to figure out a way to make all of the parts work.
One thing about the scrimmage: the defense didn't have Ian Thomas, who was out with an injured foot. He is back and is an important part of the defense.

J from Louisville, , Kentucky — 01:06 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Bob, give an illini fan some hope for the mizzou game. I have seen my beloved illini play ten live football games, but have never seen them win. Been to every border war only to get on the metro dissapointed and jabbed (literally) by those terrible tiger fans. That weekend always ruins my birthday!

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:08 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

J,

0-10? Wow, that's tough.

A couple of things that might make you feel better: Missouri isn't as good as it was last year and it lost its most recent game to Navy. Missouri, if it has a bad game, can lose to Illinois.
Second: the Illinois offense is going to be a mystery to Missouri. And that could be a huge advantage for Paul Petrino. If Illinois gets off to a fast start, then maybe Missouri is the team that panics.
Sorry about the painful train rides.

Salt from Ormond Beach, FL — 01:09 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Is Evan Wilson and Darius Millines going to have a big impact for Illini this year? Evan's height and good hands seem like a great weapon for the arsenal.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:09 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

Salt,

I keep asking about both and keep getting positive responses from the coaches. But they are also quick to remind that the guys just got here. But both players have potential to make an impact, if not this year than in the near future.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:10 PM on Tue, 08/17/2010

I'm going to cut it off for the day. Thanks for all of your great questions and sorry to those I didn't get to.
I'll be back Wednesday for another chat. Hard to believe the season is less than three weeks away.
